basic Intelligence
1. The NIS Program is steadily fulfilling the f estal Mission
set forth for it by the National Security Council in latellig nce Directive
No. 3 of 13 January 194$. During almost nine years of operation a total
of 3,54? NIS sections has boon produced, representing more then 65% of
total world aewsrage, principally an areas of high priority established by
the JCS. NIS coverage of the Shoo-Soviet bloc countries is essentially
complete and under active ate csi and similar coverage should be
realised by next year for nearly all areas is Western Europe, the Near
Last, and the Far East. The" are significant contributions to the
National Intelligence effort and attest to the consistently strong, co-
oordionted support of some 40 government activities which contribute
to the NIL

4. Related to the NIS Program are the foreign geographic name
gaaeetteears which are finding extensive use throughout the Government.
NO t asettoere comprising nearly two million geographic names have
been produced to date and essentially cover all foreign areas of the world.
g this lies.-nth period .1** MS Gasetteers were produced. and an
additional nine were revised and published under the NO maintenance
program.
S. Agency support and coordination were excellent during the
period at this report. NIS iatofigene a requirements were reviewed
and extended to better serve the Increasing meads of the Government
for comprehensive basic intelligence. While some aspects of our
intrelliig.nce have improved in quality. we, cast view with complacency
the present level of agent. Moreover, all contributing agencies
are prang to defer l production until the latter portions of a fiscal
year which cactuses a high production peak towards the end of the boar
and, In turn, creates a heavy review overload and results is unacceptable
in the processing and production of the finished intelligence.
rtaeut, intelligence quality suffers reader such last minute
tion pressure.
