A Ak Approved For Release 2000/08/29 : CIA-RDP78-05597A000200060011-7 DRAFT 10 December -i 957 The Honorable Sinclair Wesks Secretary of Commerce shington 25, D. C. Dear Mr. Weeks: It has coma* to my attention that you do not now receive certain national intelligence publications which I believe you and your principal advisers might find useful in discharging your responsibilities relating to foreign policy matters. The National Intelligence Survey (NIS) is the most comprehensive of thew publications and is designed to fulfill world-wide basic intelligence requirements of the Government. The NIS Chapter I (Brief) an individual foreign countries would perhaps be most convenient for your use as it presents the salient basic intellig uce aspects of the area as a whole, and also an evalua- tion of these aspects. This NIS unit is used as the standard basic inteltigsace reference by the Departments of State and Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and U. S. Intelligence Agencies. I am enclosing the NIS Chapter I on Belgium as an example of this kind of intelligence. The accompanying NIS Reference Guide will give you further particulars regarding the NIS program and its current status. If your examination of this material reveals a need for these publications, I shall see that your requirements are taken care of in the regular NITS diseemination. Sincerely, Alien W. Dulles Director EnclOSUres: i. Chapter I on Belgium NIIS Reference Guide Attachment B (tabs not used) Approved For Release 2000/08/29 : CIA-RDP78-05597A000200060011-7
