Approved For Release I999/0JC0'~ 'CIA-RDP78-05597A000300010029-2 10 April 1938 :ASIC INTELLIO NCZ 1. NIS production during the reporting period brought the total NIS produced thus far to 3,969 sections which represents 69% of initial world coverage, and brings coverage on areas in the JCS high priority group to 93%. The Department of State is now taking measures to correct the situation which seriously affected its NIS production during the early part of the fiscal year, and a substantial increase in State's production is anticipated during the next few months. 2. The NIS Chapters I are proving essential to high planning and policy levels in providing brief analytical summaries of basic intelligence on NIS areas. Chapters I have so far been produced on 29 high priority areas. The NIS Annuals have recently been developed to provide interim maintenance for Chapters I and to keep NIS users reasonably up to date on significant new developments. 3. Interagency support and coordination were excellent during the period of this report. NIS intelligence requirements wore reviewed and extended to better serve the increasing needs of government for comprehensive basic intelligence. Continuing improvement is noted in the acquisition of basic intelligence materials which is attributable in large part to the systematic guidance and stimulus provided by the NIS program.
