This snornin and I joined ~ and some of his personnel listening to Maj. Norton. a medium-sized Army JAG with-,a massive smile. The Major said his office consisted of two or three people producing three different mimeographed publications based on Library of Congress and overseas JAG sources: (a) Country law studies (for all NATO and several other areas). These compare foreign legal codes with others. (b) Criminal law surveys. These show the structure of the judiciary, Status of Forces agreements, and criminal law of the country covered. Seven or eight of these have been published; Colombia and Venezuela being produced. (c) Foreign law studies of the Soviet Union and European Satellites. These pick up individual topics. such as the death sentence. 25X1A9a 2. In talking of users, the Major said overseas JAGS often needed information on subjects listed under 1. (b) in order to operate with U. S. Forces overseas. He said the CA/MG school at Camp Gordon had also asked him for advice in assembling occasional briefing knowledge for CA/MG planning. Users of the NIS there, he said, thought our NIS was not specific enough on criminal law and penal codes. 3. In response to my question if he knew any activity interested in public safety. he spoke of the Ft. Bragg school for special forces and again of Camp Gordon where public safety inforir.ation was needed. He promised hat he would find out more about this and also would provid with an opposite number in the provost marshall organization. He cited the Ford Foundation and various universities interested in foreign law studies. He mentioned SORO asking why they seem to be engaged in an effort duplicating the NIS, and received a modest round of applause (in a smaller interview later in office).25X1A9a 25X1A9a 4. The meeting in office ended with plans for exchange with the Major of Section "r is and his copying pertinent items out of the FY 64 MIS Production Schedule.
