Approved For Release 2060/08/29 : CIA-RDP78-05597A000 070031-3 10 July 1964 SUBJECT: IAD Meeting 25X1A9a Mr. Jack Smith conducted the DD/I staff meeting this morning. After introducing as a new member of the DD/I executive staff he called on John Vance to report on his visit to NAVCOSAC, a new training center in computer methods in the Navy Yard (former Naval Gun Factory-). Vance talked about computer hardware and "soft ware". He said there were 495 computer centers now in the Department of Defei.se, and the estimated cost of operation was between $30 and $150 per instruction fed to the machine. Great things loom ahead - hardware such as optical scanners and special reproducers. There are now some 50, 000 programmers in the United States and the se need management because their imaginations tend to exceed the capacity of the computers they are programming. The training center is open to flag officers at the moment, after which less senior officers will be admitted. Paul Borel hoped that senior officers in the Agency would attend so they wuuld know enough about computers to avoid being sold a bill of goods. Jack Smith then told about the atmosphere surrounding the Director. Saigon has slightly waned; Cuba is always with us, and Cyprus is a horrendous problem about which the U. S. can do nothing. Chester Cooper then carried on about matters of concern much the way the NY Times does in its weekly news review and mentioned being posted at the White House until November. Jack Smith said Mr. Cline would be back from his long absence since May next Monday noon. Approved For Release 2000/08/29 : CIA-RDP78-05597A000300070031-3
