You will be interested is knowing about some rather frantic calls
for the NIS en the Dominican Republic by others and particularly the
National Military Command Center. Suddenly faced with a tactical,
operational situation they evidently were grasping at straws In their
seed for basic facts, which again demonstrates the worth of the
philosophy of the HIS Program -- having the pertinent information
on band when the whistle blows.

One of the NMCC duty officers reported on Monday that during the
weekend a senior officer needed NIS an the Dominican Republic sad, for
sane disconcerting reason, was unable to acquire same train DIA. As
a result, Capt. Sertholf had the CIA Library furnish all available HIS
on the Dominican Republic to the NMCC by special courier.
The CIA Library called to report that it had expended its copies
of the town plan of unto Domingo and could not service several urgent
requests. The negatives of the MIS map in the Urban Areas unit were
obtained tram the Records Center -- thanks to the thought-through
policy of filing all such negatives against emorgeacy -- and rushed to
the printer as a priority job.
Upon urgent request from a MMCC duty officer 031 also seat to
thee, draft manuscripts on the Manpower unit and on Religion. Education,
& Public Informations. These of course would supplement the coverage
in the General Survey which was dated May 1964.
1 think it must be considered something of s professional tragedy
that, as subsequently relayed to 0111, in behalf of MMCC frantic request
was made of Standard Oil for all possible copies of their Esso map on
the country. What somehow was not known to 1YMCC was that the equiva-
lest of the Lsso map fee it happens. a Texaco sue) was included in the
readily available MS on Highways (dated June 1963), with other pertinent
maps in the Topography unit dated January 1964. The Coast it Landing
Reaches unit was dated May 1963 and the Urban Areas unit with the
detailed Seats Domingo map was dated July 1964.
Typically 031 has not had feedbacks from other users. but I will
make book that over the past fortnight the General Survey has had pretty
dog-eared use.
