My dear Admiral Hillenkoetter:
Reference is made to your letter of January 55 in which you asked
that the Department of the Interior designate a Department representa-
tive in connection with NIS. In response, Dan Wheeler was designated
and has since conferred with of your office, who,
in turn, requested that he confer further with Dr. John B. Appleton
of the Department of State..
This is to confirm acceptance by the Department of the Interior of
your delegation to it of the responsibility, with the Department of
State, of preparing certain sections of Chapter 6, "Economics" of these
NIS.

I have appointed a committee in the Department of the Interior con-
sisting of the Directors of the bureaus which will be engaged in our
portion of these studies. I have designated to work with that committee,
and as the Department's liaison representative with your office and the
Department of State, Mr. Joseph S. McGrath, Chief, Foreign Minerals
Branch, Bureau of Mines. Mr. McGrath will succeed to the duties relating
to this project heretofore carried on by Mr. Wheeler who has returned to
his previous assignments. and others of your staff may in 25X1A9a
the future communicate with Mr. McGrath? who may be reached in room 2759,
Interior Building, and on tie .line 181., extension. 3576.
For your information, I am enclosing a copy of a letter I have
written today to Dr. Appleton.
