The Language and Area School is offering a beginning course in Uzbek.
This is believed to be the first Central Asian language course taught in a
government language school. It is designed now to broaden the Agency's ac-
cess to Central Asian intelligence sources and to prepare in advance for
dealing with Uzbeks in their own tongue. At present, only two employees
outside of LAS have indicated knowledge of Uzbek, and that limited. In- 25 1,4 a1

B. OTHER ACTIVITIES
Lieut. General Leon W. Johnson, U. S. Representative, NATO Standing
Group, and Mrs. Johnson, and one of the members of the General's staff,
have resumed their course in Intermediate French with = Class meets 25X1A9a
twice weekly, 0900 to 1030. Lt. Gen. Johnson has been nominated by the Pres-
ident for the rank of full general.
2. Elementary Spoken Romanian #1 increased from two hours, three times
a week to three hours, three times a week. 25:1,9a
3. took over coordination and administration of the out-
of-hours anguage training program on 7 August. He is now planning and pre-
paring for the courses scheduled to begin on 4 September.
4. The Language Advisory Committee met and discussed plans for the up- 25:1A9a
coming out-of-hours program, was present at the meeting and arrange-
ments were made to turn the responsibility for the program over to him as co-
ordinator. The committee will meet every week in the future until the out-
of-hours program is well under way. 25X

Pictori en er on Long Island, where he served as Technical Adviser on Stra-
tegic Intelligence School's proposed film "Free Europe." He is now reviewing
the script writer's "treatment or prospectus of the film and expects to review
shortly the first animation sketches. This will be the only film in the SIS
area series to be divided in two parts, which will total at least 7 reels.

at this time, an extra day was devoted to Qualifications Review and Placement
Panels on 15 August, Training for which candidates were considered and ap-
proved (one conditionally) was: Chinese reading (NSA or CIA), Turkish com-
prehensive (FSI), advanced Chinese (FSI-Taichung), Italian comprehensive
(FSI), French comprehensive (FSI , and Persian comprehensive (CIA). Next 25X1A9a
series of panels for sixteen (16) persons will be on 29 August. Files of
all will be reviewed, and-will interview each before the panels meet.
