Approved For Relea WON IMf - U0130013-1 28 August 1973 MEMORANDUM FOR: Acting Director, Office of Basic and Geographic Intelligence FROM : Chief, Cartography Division, OBGI SUBJECT : Proposed issuance of facsimile copies of Atlas of The Peoples' Republic of China 1. The recently acquired copies of an Atlas of the Peoples' Republic of China (State Publishing House, Peking, October 1972) appears to be an important source of information on the current PRC administrative structure and place name changes. It is also a most recent overt source for railroad and highway alignments. The number of copies of the publication is limited, however, and with the going price in Hong Kong now about US $100 a copy there is small likelihood of many more copies being acquired. 2. Cartography Division recommends that the atlas be reproduced here in a black and white halftone edition. The technique has been used before, notably in the case of the Red Guard Atlas, which was reproduced as a black and white line printing. MLD has advised that the latter atlas went quickly out of stock and suggests that should the 1972 atlas be reproduced in black and white, at least 150 copies be printed for official use. 3. If the project is approved, guidance is requested on CIA attribution, external dissemination, and other soft political decisions. 4. Printing Services Division has been consulted on the best production techniques and coordination between Cartography Division and PSD will permit the complete atlas to be produced for somewhat less than $20.00 per copy, in black and white.
