1. Prior to the 1968 Bureau of the Budget decision to
transfer the foreign names support staff of the Board on Geographic
Names from the Department of Interior to the Army Map Service,
this Agency provided over 90% of the financial support to the
BGN foreign names activity as part of the National Intelligence
Survey (NIS) Gazetteer Program. Associated with this activity
was the printing and publishing of country gazetteers, the cost of
which was also provided for by this Office. A FY 1969 understanding
with your Department of Technical Affairs reaffirmed that we
would continue to cover the printing costs of these gazetteers.
2. As a consequence of the termination of the NIS Program
by USIB action on 19 July 1973, It is now necessary for this Office
to and its association with country gazetteer production. We will
terminate our financial support with the completion of the gazetteer
on Southern Rhodesia.

3. We continue to regard the foreign geographic names
activity as a useful one, and are hopeful that alternative
sources of funding may be found.
