The same condition prevailed prior to the Indochina Atlas and others. b. There is, however, an eager group of producers. c. Contents and format determination is better done after general themes are established by the regional experts and designers. 2. Evaluation of topics: a. USSR Agriculture - Nothing in depth in English exists, we can do something worthwhile. - It would be a major effort in both GD and CD. - Work can begin P lately. - Target date, fat' 4. b. Economic Resources and Transport of Eastern Europe : - Existing coverage is comprehensive in detail, but not in scope. - We can do something worthwhile. - It would be a major effort in CD, but not so great in GD. - Work can begin immediately - Target date, mid 1974. c. Indian Ocean: - No coverage of consequence. - May be an "Atlas of ignorance". - Major effort in GD, may be more visual than cartographic. - Work can begin immediately. - Target date, early 1975. d. Polar Regions: - Would be a tough one to do something worthwhile, unclassified (Canada & USSR both are problems, for different reasons). - Wealth of source material exists. - Would include Siberian Development. - No good reason to publish on Arctic and Antarctic simultaneously. - Minor effort could begin soon, publication mid 1975. Straits of the World: - Nothing exists. - State is doing a definitive study on technicalities of offshore claims. - BGI effort should take up where State leaves off, giving some dimension to the legal, maritime and pollution problems. - Major effort in GD by small group, fairly heavy graphic and cartographic effort. - Work should begin in early 74. 3. Atlases which should be undertaken as reference aids: General Reference Atlas of the Moslem World. Administrative and Transportation Atlas of the PRC. - English language coverage of each of the above areas is badly needed. - Major effort in CD, very little in GD. - Work can begin immediately. General Reference Atlas of the USSR. - Nothing in English exists at adequate scale. - Major effort in CD, little in GD. - Work can begin immediately.
