OPTIC Approved For Release 2009/08/26: CIA-RDP78-06096A000200020008-0 5010-104 ~7 =[ NOW UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT Memorandum CONFIDENI]AL TO : Director of Training FROM : Chief, School of International Communism SUBJECT: Weekly Activities Report No. 7 29 March - 12 April 1965 I. SIGNIFICANT ITEMS None to report. II. OTHER ACTIVITIES DATE: 12 April 1965 1. The two special announcements which had issued for25X1 the 19 April ACO have stirred up considerable n erect within the DDP, particularly since Al hand-carried copies to virtually every. branch which might have a potential student. Quite expectedly, most of the interest is concentrated on.the non-Agency guest speakers, and most of the inquiries have been concerned with attendance at these "specials." We had hoped, however, that the combination of a vigorous recruiting effort and a few external attractions might result in a larger enrollment than has normally been true.in recent years. So far, this has not been the case. I suppose one could convey the results on a purely relative statistical basis -- in which case it would look good -- up 50% (from 8 to 12:). So far as we know at the moment the DDP is planning to pick up the tab fo Incidentally, the students in the Chiefs of Station Seminar will be attending the four guest presentations. 2. In the same vein -- there has been a rather sharp drop-off in Introduction to Communism. We are starting one today with only eleven students -- less than one-half of our previously smallest IC group. Apparently the time has come to schedule fever ICs per year than has been our practice -- possibly one each quarter. We are neither so egotistical nor so lazy that we object to conducting classes for small groups, but in the interests of efficiency and the gaining of reading time for the staff it would probably be wiser to cut the number of offerings. As we can now project our schedule this action would merely eliminate overlapping courses -- would not create significant or obvious gaps in our formal class schedules. On 7 Aprill attended a lecture at New State delivered by Sir Isaiah Berlin, chele Professor of Social and Political Theory, Oxford. He spoke for one hour on "Russian National Self-Obsession." In spite of the rather forbidding title the presenta- tion turned out to be witty, entertaining, scholarly, and useful -- as we suspected it might be (an opinion derived from having read some of his books). 1. We are enormously pleased not only with acceptance at Harvard, but with the designation of his advisor, Professor Montgomery, because of the association with the African Institute at Brandeis. has been studying the Harvard catalogue and we are hopeful that he w be able to work out a really profitable program. There seems to be an abundance of offerings right down the line with his plans. I have in- formed that it is customary to split the $1,000 honorarium with the appropriate School Chief and Office Director. 5.I Ireport on his TDY seems to indicate a suc- cessful effort on his part. It's rather scouraging to note, however, that the station officer who is actually responsible for conduct of the liaison with this particular group -- in a private discussion with Henry -- pointed out that he expected nothing to come of it or to change. In his judgment the group has evidenced a tradition of uncooperativeness which may be dented a bit, but won't be broken. 25X1 LJA I Completely unrelated -- except that it also involves is the rather happy news that his oldest daughter, a senior at oug as, has been awarded a $3,000 fellowship at Yale for graduate study in history. 6.
