TO : Executive Assistant to the
Director of Training
Chief, Language School
SUBJECT: Weekly Activities Report
DATE: 16 January 1970
25X1A9a 1. The OTR Security Officer, arranged a
meeting with CRS Personnel to determine whether or not
Classified Motion Pictures held by CRS could be used by
contract instructors in the Language School. He had already
determined that the instructors could not be cleared for
access to the classified film, most of which is classified
not because of substance but because of its manner of acquisi-
tion. It was determined that these film could not be made
available to instructors as presently cleared. CRS Personnel
agreed to rent or purchase other film, identified by the
Language School as desirable for language training purposes.
2. The CIA Librarian has indicated that it might be
possible to relocate a reduced Hqs. Language Laboratory in
the CIA Library. He is sympathetic to the idea but would
like more details before discussing the matter with his
superiors. This would be an ideal relocation point if we
decide to relocate the laboratory at Hqs.
3. In coordination with the Psychological Services
Staff we are beginning to explore the degree to which
hearing problems may account for poor language learning.
We have no reason to believe that students who did not do
well in language training may have had hearing problems,
but it would be interesting to learn whether or not this
was the case.
4. Meetings this week with a full-time German student
(a supergrade officer) and a full-time Thai student reflected
complete satisfaction on the part of each with the training

each was getting in LS. Each praised the instructors with
whom they were in contact and both felt that the LS procedures
and methods were excellent. They felt that their training
objectives were bein more than adequately met
5. First semester critique forms have been sent to
all Program students. Early returns promise that this
will turn out to be a most fruitful exercise. We are also distributing questionnaires to all the instructors.
When all the critiques and questionnaires are in and evaluated,
plans a meeting with the instructors to discuss
problems encountered during the first semester and ways of
improving the - Program.
6. has learned that both of the published
articles that have arisen from the linguistic study of
Chinese at LS/TR are included in the current recommended
reading list for Chinese students at Georgetown Univers! ty.
These are "Teaching the Chinese Stative Verb" (Language
Learning, Vol XIII, No. 2, 1963) and "Aspects of the
Chinese Verb" (Linguistics, No. 38, 1968).
7. The Inspector General is taking a close look at
Vietnamese language training and the utilization of such IV/
trainees. We have already received several calls from FE
Division to verify some of the data and to evaluate candidates.
8. The flu season hit the German Department particularly
hard this week. All classes were covered, but with some
difficulty because the German staff is short one Instructor.
25X1A9a ( of the Chinese department is filling in.)
Clearance on a new German Instructor is expected some time
in February.
9. Last October a Swedish student was sent to external
25X1A5a1 training at because the sponsoring office was reluctant
to have him trained (for security reasons) in an Agency
25X1A5a1 building. The Swedish course at s now being
terminated because the Desk has deemed it to be a failure,
despite good aptitude and motivation on the part of the
student. Our Swedish staff has agreed to help out with
