Approved For Relee 2000/08/ F78-06363A000200020024-4 W/ 0 L. 4 September 1970 FROM : Acting Chief, School of Intelligence and World Affairs SUBJECT : Weekly Report of School of Intelligence and World Affairs No. 18, 28 August - 3 September 1970 COURSE ACTIVITY Intelligence Techniques 25X1A9a The ITC ends this Friday. Most of this final week has been spent on the course research paper. Last Friday we had two excellent pres- entations: an analyst in OSI/NED, did a fine job of des- cribing his sources, methods, the problems he ran into, and their finished intelligence reports on Chinese production of nuclear materials. He was especially good at making this highly technical subject under- standable to an "unscientific" audience. The many good questions tes- 25X1A9a tified to class interest and understanding. On Friday afternoon we convened a panel of three former CTs: 25X1A9a from OSR. They discussed briefly the life, work, and problems of an analyst in a DDI production office and then answered questions in a session that was lively and which went overtime. Writing Workshop 25X1A9a 25X1A9a COMMO Training Officer, called to request a special running of a basic Writing Workshop this fall. told him about our current shortage of instructors and suggested he write a memo to DTR outlining this request and projected needs for training in writing. COMMO has always been one of the heaviest users of Writing Workshops and now believes it could fill up to three classes a year itself. Advanced Intelligence Seminar A number of senior Agency personnel--some not acquainted with the AIS--have been contacted and briefed on the course. Many made helpful suggestions and some committed--or recommitted--themselves to an. Probably most importantly, all acknowledged the need for a properly balanced student representation if the Seminar concept is truly to be realized. They indicated they would keep these needs in mind when selections are made, and would entertain guidance from us. Orientation for Overseas Registrations for the September 00 jumped from three to six in the last few days before the opening date. During the slack fall season, we plan to run a one-day tutorial for classes smaller than five registrants. For five to ten students we are using a modified two-day curriculum which omits the only two guest briefers who must be pulled off their regular work when they assist us. Our expanded session for the ladies continues to be popular. This time we had the best panel of returnees since took over the course 13 months ago. The two single women and one wife on the panel had had tours in four of the five countries to which the registrants were going. Two of the panel members were spotted in CPB's periodic list of recent returnees. We hope to make increased use of these lists in. the future. This week Marc talked with some WH officers about suggestions concerning the new country kits for the 00. This division has been the poorest supporter of the 00, with only six registrants in FY 1970. They promised full support in the future. We have discussed our proposal of a short "Seminar for Overseas" with Dr. Gerry Winfield of AID, and he has agreed to come in for a half day. Our Roundtable sources place him on the same platform performance level with Messrs. Bostain and Droge. Dr. Winfield is uniquely effective in presenting a task-oriented overview of the matrix of forces which shape the values and behavior of a people. 25X1A9a 25X1A14a Approved For Release 2000/08/21 ;:, P- 9P78-06363A000200020025-4 Approved For Release 2000/08/21 : W_1478-06363A000200020025-4 BRIEFING ACTIVITY 25X1A9a 25X1A9a 25X1A9a 25X1A9a US Government Groups On 28 August, at 1000 Glebe, a CIA program was conducted for the ten students enrolled in FSI's "Budget and Fiscal Operations Course. OTHER ACTIVITY Attendance at OFC 25X1A6a We have reviewed the schedule for the next Operations Familiari- zation Course. There appears to be little, if any, overlap or duplication 25X1A9a between, it and the recently conducted Intelligence and World Affairs 25X1A9a Course. However, will attend the lecture on 9 Se tember: "Work of the Clandestine Service Abroad" which is handled by of the staff and the follow-up panel of staff members discussing: "People of the Clandestine Service Abroad". He will also consult with the OFC 25X1A9a faculty on other presentations which one of our faculty should hear. In addition, may audit the lecture on Soviet bloc operations 25X1A6a since he will probably be present at-for a couple of days for the CS course for DDS&T during the week of 21 to 25 September. Particularly our Wq r d Affairs Faculty is well acquainted with the content of the OFC, Approved For Release 20008/21? 4 P78-06363A000200020025-4 Approved For Release 2000/08/21 : igx78-06364000200020025-4 as well as with the guest lecturers.
