The Tu-na grid patterns consist of two distinct sections; one just north of Shan-shan and the other just southeast of the town (Figure 2). They cover an area of approximately 300 square miles. Each section is made up of parallel ground scars 4-6 FIGURE 1. LOCATION OF TU-NA GRID PATTERNS AND OTHER PATTERNS IN GENERAL VICINITY. feet wide extending generally in north-south, east-west directions to form right angles. In each section small circular ground marks, which are possibly instrumentation points, appear at regular intervals along the parallel ground-scar lines. The north-south grid lines are generally 2.5 nm apart, but they are as close as 2,000 feet at one point. The east-west lines are generally 1.5 nm apart. The grids occur on level barren desert terrain. 25X1 D 25X1 B Approved For Release 2000/05/09 : CIA-RDP78BO456OA000300010020-3 TOP SECRET CHESS RUFF TOP SECRET CHESS RUFF Approved For Release 2000/05/09 CIA-RDP78BO456OA000300010020-3 NPIC/R-129/62 NORTH GRID AREA tt, K I ~l ll 111 / i l 1, ll ll i / ll i / I -Shan-shan GRID ? Complex A is probably a support area for the activity at the patterns area. Complex B may also be associated with the grids. Complex A, the probable support complex for the grids, is located 5 nm northeast of Shan-shan and on the main highway through the region. It contains 3 large warehouses, 5 apartment- or barracks-type, and 28 storage- or maintenance-type buildings. Numerous drainage ditches and wells are located around this complex. Complex B is located on the Urumchi - Ha-mi rail line, approximately 18 nm northeast of Shan-shan. It comprises several unidentified light industries, a rail yard with six tracks, repair facilities, turning wye, several large open storage areas served by numerous rail spurs, a housing and administration area, and 20 probable barracks. A large amount of construction is taking place. A secondary road extends south- west through the grid pattern area and to Complex A. No collateral information is available on the Tu-na grid area. -3- Approved For Release 2000/05/09 : CIA-RDP78B04560A000300010020-3 TOP SECRET CHESS RUFF Approved For ReTeQfe 268I9 P 04560A000300010020-3 NPIC /R -129 /62 Mission Date Pass Camera_ Frames Classification 25X1 D SAC.
