The search included known or suspected submarine bases, shipyards, ports, coastal waters, and the open sea. In addition, each area was searched for submarine pens and associated facilities. In the Northern Fleet Area, all known sub- marine bases and ports plus about 85 percent of the ice -free coastline of the Arctic Ocean west of Novaya Zemlya were examined. Between Novaya Zemlya (70-OON 60-OOE) and Wrangel Island (70-OON 180-OOE), pack ice in the Arctic Ocean precluded the identification of submarine activ- ity. In the Pacific Fleet Area, 11 of 14 known bases and ports plus about 45 percent of the ice- free coastline of the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic Approved For RelT?pe 29L9#7 Ocean east of Wrangel Island were examined. A total of 104 submarines was observed in both areas: 84 in the Northern Fleet Area and 20 in the Pacific Fleet Area. It is felt that a substantially complete total of Northern Fleet in-port submarines was observed. In Tables 1 and 2, the disposition of the observed submarines is given by specific base or geographic location within the fleet area. The count is broken down into three categories: "small" for all submarines under 200 feet; "medium" for those between 200 feet and 260 feet; and "large" for all submarines over 260 feet. Overall, mensuration is considered to rep- resent an optimum accuracy of ? 10 to 20 feet. In many cases, however, the exact limit of bow and stern could not be accurately established even though the image itself could be identified as a submarine. 72 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X 25X1 Approved For Release 2004/05/12 : CIA-RDP78BO456OA000800010040-6 Next 1 Page(s) In Document Exempt Approved For Release 2004/05/12 : CIA-RDP78BO456OA000800010040-6 Approved For ReleaTK) NPIC/R-185/63 o&I&GLh1TC KOLA INLET AREA Dolgaya Zapadnaya Bay Eyna Bay Litsa Bay Motka Bay Rosta Sayda Bay Severomorsk BARENTS SEA AREA Bolshaya Volokovaya Bay Kildin Island (southwest coastal area) Pechanga Rybachyy Island (north coast) 69-15N 33-50E 69-39N 32-25E 69-26N 32-24E 69-38N 32-05E 69-02N 33-04E 69-15N 33-21E 69-05N 33-27E 69-22N 34-12E 69-39N 31-22E 67-04N 41-07E None 8 large SS 1 prob large SS 1 poss large SS 6 large SS 4 small SS 7 large SS 2 poss large SS 5 medium SS 1 prob medium SS 1 small SS 2 large SS 6 medium SS 3 small SS 8 large SS 1 poss large SS 2 medium SS 13 medium SS 4 small SS 1 medium SS 1 prob medium SS 25X1 25X1 D 25X1 Approved For ReIpE)p 20 CIA-RDP78B04560AOOp800010040-6 Approved For Rem 2E : Tyuva Bay 69-11N 33-38E Varlamova Bay 69-04N 33-23E Yokanga 68-04N 39-30E WHITE SEA AREA Arkhangelsk 64-32N 40-30E Kislaya Bay 66-32N 33-06E Severodvinsk 64-34N 39-49E None None; no facilities 1 large SS 2-3 u/i naval vesse s) KAMCHATKA AREA Akhomten Bay 52-26N 158-30E Not observed Bechevinskaya Bay 53-14N 159-44E Not observed Kommandorskiye Island 55-OON 167-OOE Not observed Kozyrevskoye (Bajkovo) Bay 50-43N 156-12E Not observed Listvenichnaya Bay 52-21N 158-31E Not observed Magadan 59-34N 150-48E Not observed Medvezhka Bay 53-20N 159-55E Not observed Petropavlovsk/Tarya Bay 52-55N 158-30E 4 la rge SS (2 previously reported Sarannaya Bay 52-45N 158-31E po na Non ss SS are reevaluated as u/i val vessels) e Vilyuchinskaya Bay 52-38N 158-25E Not observed Zhirovaya Bay 52-35N 158-30E Not observed Approved For Rye gffUW P : CIA-RDP78BO456QA000800010040-6 25X1 Approved For Relee NPIC/R-185/63 off?7RET Andreya Bay (and coast 100 nm to south) Boysmana Bay Dunay Komsomolsk-na-Amure Nakhodka Novik Bay Olga Pallady (Talava) Roads Peschami Point Petrovka Sedimi Bay Slavyanskiy Bay Sovetskaya Gavan Sudzukhe Bay Trambetskogo Point Troitsy Bay Uspeniya Bay Valentina Bay Vityaz Bay Vladimira Bay 42-46N 131-18E 42-54N 132-21E 50-35N 137-02E 42-48N 132-54E 43-04N 131-54E 43-42N 135-20E 42-36N 130-50E 48-27N 140-11E 43-07N 132-20E 43-OON 131-31E 42-54N 131-26E 49-O1N 140-18E 42-51N 133-40E 42-51N 132-32E 42-39N 131-07E 42-50N 133-32E 43-07N 134-20E 42-36N 131-10E 43-55N 135-28E None None Not observed 1 medium SS None None None Not observed 2 poss large SS 1 medium SS 3 small SS None None Not observed None None None None Not observed None 2 medium SS 1 prob medium SS 1 small SS 1 prob medium SS 2 poss medium SS 2 poss small SS 25X1 25X1 D 25X1 Approved For Releasfdp4/geL+~E9IIA-RDP78B04560A000P00010040-6 Approved For Release 25X1 D 25X1 L Approved For Releai@0GffJj :TO NPIC/R-185/63
