The installation consists of an open-pit mine and several asso- ciated support facilities (Figure 2). When it was 25X1 D first seen on photography of the installation appeared to have been in operation for some years. No milling or other processing NPIC H-4328 (8/63) FIGURE 1. LOCATION OF MINING INSTALLATION NEAR CHAGYL, USSR. facility is observed at the installation. However, two waste dumps are visible, and sifting and sorting of ore on a small-scale is in progress. There is little indication of the kind of ore being mined. The absence of elaborate milling and processing plants tends to rule out the possi- bility that uranium ore is mined at this installa- tion. The absence of a headgear or traveling crane at the mine pit indicates a limited mining operation. The age of the mine and the perma- nency of the housing tend to indicate that the in- stallation is associated with the miningofapre- cious metal. Description of Facilities. The installation's facilities are shown on Figure 2. The mine is an oval-shaped pit measuring 1, 000 by 700 feet. The mine appears to be deep, but no traveling crane or headgear facility for removing the ore from the pit was observed. A hoisting facility is probably located in a build- ing at the east end of the mine and hoisting lines probably run against the pit wall. A waste dump, measuring 800 by 800 feet, adjoins the pit on the west. A second waste dump, measur- ing 800 by 400 feet, is located east of the pit. An operations area contains approximately five buildings which average 100 by 50 feet. The area shows no indication of milling operations. There is photographic evidence that sifting and sorting of earth is performed on a limited scale in this area. To the north of the operations area is a possible maintenance area which contains several small workshop-type buildings. The area contains six warehouse-type buildings, averaging 200 by 80 feet in size, and several smaller buildings. A probable explosives storage area is at an isolated location north-northwest of the mine pit. This area is fenced and measures approximately 604 350 feet square. It contains a storage building (280 by 50 feet) and a small support building. The housing area contains approximately 24 single-unit family-type dwellings, 31 barracks- type buildings (200 by 40 feet), a U-shaped admin- istration-type building, an unidentified building (200 by 90 feet), and numerous small support buildings. &,0800010063-1 Approved For ReIeP01 $ek?A-F 45 Approved For kQgse 21 .(3, NPIC/R-208/63 S" En PA000800010063-1 MAPS OR CHARTS ACIC.
