This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center IPlc (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (II) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage /maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firingranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-

Two military equipment test/training areas
are located near Nizhniy Tagil, 43 kilometers
(km) south-southeast of Kushva and 38 km
west-southwest of Verkhnyaya Salda (Figure 1).
The urban complex is served by spurs from the
Sverdlovsk to Nizhniy Tagil section of the
Trans-Siberian Railroad, and by a probable
hard-surface all-weather road.
The two significant military equipment
test/training facilities are probably associated
with research and development. One includes
a tank/assault-gun firing range and tracked-
vehicle driver training facility with nine asso-
ciated support buildings and is located (Fig-
ures 2 and 3) 10 km west-southwest of the
center of the city at 57-53N 059-48E. The
other is an armament test range 8.5 km south-
east of the city at 57-51N 060-04E (Figures
4 and 5) with an approximate 23- by 2-km op-
erations area and 11 barracks, one ammunition
storage building, and 43 support buildings.
Two tracked-vehicle test facilities and
one wheeled-vehicle test facility are associated
with the Nizhniy Tagil complex. These test
facilities are probably associated with the
Nizhniy Tagil Railroad Car and Tank Plant
Kaganovich 183 (57-55N 060-05E).
An ICBM complex support facility, transfer
point, and ICBM complex logistics facility are
located 29 km northeast of the center of the
city at 58-02N 060-23E.

three impact areas in the armament test range
operations area.
Railroad Service
The city of Nizhniy Tagil is served by
a double-track rail line, but neither the tank/
assault-gun range nor the armament test range
are served directly by rail.
Aircraft Landing Strips
The Nizhniy Tagil complex is served by
Nizhniy Tagil NE Airfield (57-59N 060-13E),
18 km east-northeast of the city.
Administrative and Troop Housing Area
Area D contains 11 barracks within a com-
pound area located in the southern sector of
the rangehead area. There are no billeting
facilities at the tank/assault-gun range.
Ammunition Storage Areas
Area F contains one 120- by 35-foot pro-
bable revetted ammunition storage building
used in connection with armament testing.
Thirty-two support buildings (Hl) are lo-
cated in the rangehead area and 11 in the oper-
ations area. Nine support buildings are located
adjacent to the tank/assault-gun range in area
H2.
Small-Arms Firing Range
Area L is a 450- by 125-foot small-arms
range of the known distance type located adjacent
to the rangehead facilities.

Driver Training Area
Area M is a tracked-vehicle driver training
area adjacent to the tank/assault-gun firing
range. A tracked-vehicle test area is located
4 km east-northeast of the Nizhniy Tagil Rail-
road Car and Tank Plant Kaganovich 183. A
secondary tracked-vehicle test area is located
10 km west-northwest of the plant. I'ourteen
probable equipment storage buildings, 170- by

wheeled-vehicle test track is located 2 km
southwest of this tank plant. The test tracks
are probably associated with the tank plant.
