Launch Area No 3 lies in the center of a
small, heavily wooded area at an approximate
elevation of 650 feet. The surrounding terrain
is hilly and rolling. An improved probably
all-weather road connects the area directly with
the probable complex rail-to-road transfer
point, 3.5 nm to the northeast, and with Smor-
gon. The probable rail-to-road transfer point
is a railyard 0.8 nm southwest of Smargon along
the main line connecting Smorgon and Vilnius.
The yard is seven tracks wide and contains
approximately 20 buildings of which six are very
large warehouse types and the others are proba-
bly shops and storage. The area is also
connected by an improved road network to the
other launch areas in the complex. Launch Areas
No 1 and 2, both complete Type III areas, are
located 5.7 nm to the north and 10.5 nm to the
north-northeast, respectively. The Smorgon
Fixed Field Site is located 8.8 nm to the north-
northeast.
This launch area was first observed in
at which time,
because of the poor quality of the photography,
only the outline of the launch site, the site
access road, three buildings in the administra-
tion and housing section, and some of the road
network were discernible. The status of con-
struction could not be determined. Smorgon
Launch Area No I was in the midstage of con-
struction and Launch Area No 2 was also first
observed in the early stage of construction. The
Smorgon Fixed Field Site
No 3 was again observed and excavations for the
control bunker and two launc'i silos were dis-
cernible. New scarring was visible in the admin-
istration and housing section but no increase
in facilities was observed. Launch Area No
3 was identified as a hype IV IRBM launch area
in the early stage of construction. Construction
also was proceeding at the two soft launch areas.

in the site support facility. Launch Area No I
was in the late stage of construction and Launch
Area No 2 was in the early to midstage of con-
struction. the complex was again covered in

the loop road was present, but some activity
was continuing around the three launch silos.
