PREFACE
This report is a summary of selected information
on transportation and infiltration activity in southeast
Asia as reported by NPIC during the period indicated
on the cover. Those lines of communication and associ-
ated facilities which support communist insurgency in
Laos and South Vietnam are emphasized.
Items are numbered and arranged according to location
from north to south. Annotated maps of varying scales
have been included to assist the reader in locating the
items. Each large-scale map depicts all motorable roads
photographically confirmed by NPIC unless otherwise in-
dicated.
Missions, mission dates, frames, and NPIC cable
and briefing board references are listed after each item,
as appropriate.

Road Status, Laos Panhandle
Road repairs and reconstruction are rapidly approaching completion
on the communist road network in the Laos Panhandle. Since Summary 64
(intelligence through -- which confirmed road usage south
to Sepone -- another 310 nautical miles of road show evidence of light 25X1D
traffic. Using photography from road usage
is now confirmed south to Ban Bac and north from Route 110 to 15-25N
107-OOE along Route 96. The entire length of 110 shows evidence of
.sage and the route is being extended into Cambodia in the tri-border area.
The following developments, presented generally in north to south
:order and depicted on the accompanying map, were observed during the
reporting period of

Route 23 (Figures 1 and 3) is sustaining light usage south to at
least 17-15N 105-30E (UTM A wooden bridge has been construc-
ted over the Se Bang Fai river near Ban Pak Phanang at 17-24N 105-45E
An additional segment of Route 23 is o en between the
limit of photographic coverage at 17-1ON 105-35E and 17-06N

to 16-38k 106-25E , north of Ban Dong. From this point

where the road deteriorates to a trail. A ferr cable is observe. across

Route 96 (Figure 10) also evidences light vehicular use from the
limit of photographic coverage at 15-23N 107-O1E , north of 25X1D
Chavane, to its junction with Route 110 (Figure 11). An active ford
crosses the Dak Xou (river) at 14-44N 107-16E 25X1D

A new road is under construction east of Attopeu, between Routes
96 and 110 (Summary 65, Item 3).
Route 110 evidences light usage from the Laos/Cambodia border to
its junction with Route 96 (Figures 11 and 12). Two new serviceable
by-pass roads have been constructed and several existing by-pass roads
have been reactivated. One by-pass extends east from 14-36N lo6-38E
and rejoins the main road at 14-37N l06-39E
The second extends south from 14-42N 107-07E and rejoins the
main road at - The followin reviously existing by-passes are
reactivated: from 14-38N lo6-4lE to 14-40N 106-44E

Cambodia Route 97 is in use from the Laos/Cambodia border to 14-35N
106-31E , on the south bank of the Tonle Kong (river).

Traffic from Route 110 continues toward the Tri-border area on
Route 96/110 to 14-42N 107-18E, then east again on Route 110. Route 25X1D
110 has been extended from 14-39N 107-27E , in Laos, to 14-37N
107-31E , in Cambodia. The road then divides and vehicle 25X1D
tracks extend to 14-36N 107-31E and 14-38N 107-32E
Additional clearing operations on each of these segments are observed
for several hundred yards.
