PREFACE
This report is a summary of selected information
on transportation and infiltration activity in southeast
Asia as reported by NPIC during the period indicated
on the cover. Those lines of communication and associ-
ated facilities which support communist insurgency in
Laos and South Vietnam are emphasized.
Items are numbered and arranged according to location
from north to south. Annotated maps of varying scales
have been included to assist the reader in locating the
items. Each large-scale map depicts all motorable roads
photographically confirmed by NPIC unless otherwise in-
dicated.
Missions, mission dates, frames, and NPIC cable
and briefing board references are listed after each item,
as appropriate.

North Vietnam/China Road Network Under Construction
Construction is nearing completion on the North Vietnam/China Road
Network which will connect the road and rail systems in southern China
with the Hon Gai/Hai Phong area of North Vietnam. Final grading of North
Vietnam Route 415 has been extended to the China border since
and continuous road construction is now discernible in China to the 25X1D
limit of photographic coverage (see maps and photos on pages 3, 4, and 5).
Although segments of Route 415 remain limited to a single-lane capability,
the entire network of newly constructed roads in North Vietnam is
serviceable from the China border to the junction with Route 18, 6 nm
west of Hon Gal
Nine bridges have been completed along that segment of Route 13B
included in the network since its construction status was reported last
- (compare Figure 4 with Figure 12, Summary No. 62). All road
segments under construction at that time have also been completed (compare
Figure 6 with Figure 16, Summary No. 62). Althou h a new POL drum storage

abandoned.
South from Route 13B, the network utilizes newly constructed segments
of Routes 184, 183 and 1805, and the new Route 1830. All of this road
construction -- including bridges -- has been recently completed. The
alignment is presented on page 9 and Figures 7 through 14 depict selected
segments of the new roads.
A further expansion of the network is currently underway and will
provide an east-west alternate to Route 18 into the Ha Noi area. The
previously existing serviceable segments of Route 183 between the junction
with Route 184 (Figure 11) and 21-06-0 106-35-Mare being widened and
improved with connecting segments under construction. Intermittent road
construction continues west from Route 183, paralleling Route 18, to
