Probable Inf filtration Activity, Route 1597, North Vietnam
At least 350 personnel and 12 probable pack animals were moving
in a southerly direction towards Laos alon a one mile segment of
according to photography of This activity
Route 1597, roximate 25 nm from Mu Gia Pass
is located at 1802N 105~+7E, app ly
(Figure 1). Although personnel have been previously observed along
this route in small numbers, this is the first time that a group of
this magnitude has been observed on photography.
The personnel are moving in single file down the center of the road
and are separated at intervals of approximately 20 to 30 feet with the
pack animals interspersed between. them. Route 1597 joins Route 15
approximately ~+ nm to the southeast. Route 15 has been one of the major
routes for the infiltration of personnel and equipment tha~egRouteG101
Pass. Other alternate routes accessible from Route 1597
which generally parallels the coast and Route 137 which leads into Laos
from Route 101 (Figure 2).
