This road will connect the southern reaches of the Ho Chi Minh trail with the large Communist base areas in the Tonle San region of Cambodia (Figure 1). The 40-nm- road generally parallels the South Vietnam extension of Laos Route 110, which was constructed earlier this year, crosses the border into Cambodia base areas 701 and 702, and terminates at the Tonle San (river). Completion of this new road will connect the motorable logistics route from North Vietnam with the suspected insurgent road and waterborne network in Cambodia and permit a flow of personnel and material in both directions. The road construction is near- ing completion in spite of the southwest monsoon rainy season which has rendered all other roads in the area unserviceable. This indicates that a high degree of importance has been attached to the completion of the road prior to the approaching dry season.
