NEW CONCENTRATION OF A ?J d' For Release 2001/11/05 : CIA-RDP78BO456OA006600010026-5
ENCAMPKENTS, CNAVANE AREA, LAOS
A large concentration of
insurgent encampments has been
identified in the heavily wooded
areas immediately southeast of
Chavane, Laos. Thirteen camps
with a total of at least 180
buildings were identified during
(Figure 1).
This is the largest concentration
of insurgent facilities ever
observed in this part of the
Laotian -panhandle and is similar
to an area identified near Sepone
and Route 922 earlier this year.
Each encampment generally
consists of 10 to 20 heavily
concealed buildings with some
associated row cropping (Figure
2). While the roads leading into
Chavane remain closed, an elaborate
and well-used trail system inter-
connects the encampments. All of
the native villages in the area
have been abandoned.
The dispersal of the camps
away from Routes 96 and 165
indicates that they are most
likely utilized for personnel
housing rather than for storage.
The identification of the camps
also coincides with the normal
post-monsoonal road reconstruction
operations in Laos.
