MILITARY TRAINING ACTIVITY, LONG HOI AREA, NORTH VIETNAM
Photography of early has revealed training activity
at the Dong Hoi Army Barracks WNW located 1.6 nautical miles (nm) north-
west of the Dong Hoi Citadel between Routes lA and 104 (Figure 1).
Before being dismantled after repeated airstrikes in early 1965, the
area was estimated to have a capacity of 12,500 men and was known to
have an infantry training area and three driver-training courses.
The photography revealed numerous personnel in the barracks
area as well as in nearby villages. There is an active driver-training
area with vehicles negotiating a figure-8 course (Figure 2) and an
occupied AAA site that appears to be a training site due to the large
number of personnel present (Figure 3). Part of the dismantled barracks
area is being used for a motor pool, where several trucks are parked
and POL facilities for refueling are observed. Forty-five cargo trucks,
seven tents, eight POL tank trucks, and at least one hundred 55-gallon
POL drums are in the immediate area. The vehicles are being utilized
in training, are parked, or are undergoing repairs in a vehicle
maintenance area.
The activity at the Long Hoi Army Barracks WNW is the first indi-
cation that the North Vietnamese are reactivating abandoned military
areas south of the 19th parallel and are initiating new training programs
near the extreme southern portion of North Vietnam.
