Only equipment produced in Warsaw Pact countries and China is included. The list is based on the May 1972 STANAG nomenclature list, but it has been expanded in a few topical areas. It is designed to standardize terminology when reporting OB in order to minimize discrepancies that impede computer retrieval of specific items of equipment. Blip sheets and all other forms on which OB is written by the PI have the 24-character spaces indicated, so when writing a long term which does not fit, check the approved form in the list rather than improvising. All terms are singular. Become familiar with the items of equipment that you will be reporting and use the exact form given in the list. Note apparent inconsistencies such as this on page 1: SHADDOCK MSL TRANSPORTER SCUD OXIDIZER TRNSPRTR This occurs because SHADDOCK MISSILE TRANSPORTER would have 25 charac- ters even if transporter had been abbreviated by eliminating all vowels (trnsprtr). Most equipment is cited by model number only, as: T-10M (not T-10M TANK); DDA-53 (not DDA-53 DECON VEHICLE). When the model cannot be determined, do not use the word--TYPE. Use the descriptive generic term shown underlined in the left column: HEAVY TANK, ROCKET LAUNCHER, or FA PIECE. Similar models which can- Approved For Release 2006/01/0SERDP78B04560A007400010007-7 Approved For Release 2006/01/03 : j'p78B04560A007400010007MPIC/R-26/73 not be precisely distinguished may be cited as JS-3/4, FUG/OT-65, or R-401/405, On the other hand, no models are cited that use a number or letter in parentheses, The present computer retrieval program cuts off anything that follows the open- ing parenthesis. That is the symbol used to indicate that what follows is addi- tional descriptive information, not actually part of the equipment name. Follow the current set of elements of essential information (EEIs) for ground force facilities (GG-) , being careful to list equipment under the proper trinome. The trinome has usually been indicated after main headings in the following list, but occasionally specific items have the trinome indicated in the information column on the right. Derelict and dummy equipment should be list- ed under the OBJ trinome: DERELICT TANK; DUMMY SA-2 MISSILE. Adjectives should go in parentheses in the space for additional informa- tion below the date. The computer searches on the basis of the first letters in the target name space and does not recognize that a SMALL VEHICLE or UNIDENTIFIED RADAR should be associated with the second word, not the first. Such words as NUMEROUS and SEVERAL are almost meaningless. Try to give some indication of number, using space in the additional information line for such qualifiers as (AT LEAST) or (APPROXIMATELY), Country codes used in this list are UR (Soviet Union), GC (East Germany), CZ (Czechoslovakia), BU (Bulgaria), PL (Poland), RO (Romania), and HU (Hungary).
