Approved ATTACHMENT TO - MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief- Technical Services Group, NPIC ATTENTION . Chief, Technical Operations Staff, TSG/NPIC SUBJECT . TSG/RED Monthly Report for June 1972 A. Significant Items of Interes-t for May 1972: NPIC Consultant. A new study has been initiated to investigate visual resolution as a function of exit pupils of sizes comparable to those of microscopes (0.5 mm to 2 mm). Surprisingly, this data is lacking, despite the fact that it is especially appropriate to the design of optical instruments. 2. Color Exploitation ,dorking Group. REDI personnel assisted in developing a program to systematically investigate the intelligence value of color photography. supported IEG in their 3. IEG SALT Evaluation. RED personnel to construct an imagery rating scale related 4. Search Improvement Program gave a status briefing to the 16 Pi's who are acting as test subjects in the Search Improvement Program. The actual search training is scheduled to start in September. 5. Scan & Search PI Station. f A,,pre}iminary human evaluation report of the SSPIS (DK-865) was received NRO review(s) completed. Anoteworthy item from the monoscopic color mensuration tests on well defined targets states that the accuracy obtained on original or duplicate color films is very close to that obtained on black and white film. 14. Image Enhancement Process kemonstrated 25X1A and trained RED and PSG personnel in this process. Additional PSG personnel will be trained in-house and be available for this type work for several days`a week over a six-week period. 15. Color Technology Support Word has been received that the new test material and chemistry has been shipped and will arrive shortly. It is expected; tional material can be reproduced by the end of August. that final machine testing will be completed during July and opera.- 16. Photoscience Support lithographic reproduction. Problems were identified which need to r be solved before such an approach resu.lts,/inpress-useable inks; however, the feasibility of using dyes--rather than pigments--to produce highly-saturated inks was demonstrated. Color Equipment Investigation Program) report of the Microcolorimetry Study was received; it indicated that original photography. An interesting result is that in specifying 40 microns is approximately the limit for color specification on image, its chromaticity can be specified much more precisely than its brightness (luminance factor); this is apparent- ly due to the matte particles in the 25X1A 25X1 film. The final report of 25X1 this study will be published late this month. 25X1A 25X1A 19. TID I The TID was modified to output exact X-Y coordinates where a cloud cover decision is made. Improvement in the accuracy of decisions is expected as a result of corrected coordi- nate conversion constants. MEETINGS, BRIEFINGS, ETC.: DDP/TSD Briefing. On 23 June nine persons from DDP/TSD visited NPIC and were briefed on "the equipment that NPIC/TSG/RED has under development. Briefings were given by various RED personnel.
