FIRST MONTHLY PROSRESS F.
FOR A
ZOOM MAGNIFIER
Each monthly progress report for the Zoom Magnifier will
cover the period from, the 21.st of the previous month to the
20th of the current month. Thus, this First progress reDort
covers the period 21 May 1964 to 20 June 1964.
The initial design used for the Zoom Magnifier technical
proposal was used as the take off point for this month's
optical design effort. After reviewing the design early in
the month, consideration was given toward reducing aberrations;
namely, distortion, astigmatism, and coma throughout the zoom
range (8x - l8x) while covering the desired field. A. system
was designed which worked well at 8x magnification and covered
a field of approximately 15mm. However, at the higher powers
,
the aberrations were excessive, necessitating considerable
correction for their removal. Substitutions are now being
made for all. components of the initial design to improve per-
formance at high powers. Minutes of a meeting held on
are attached.

This meeting was held shortly after receipt of the order
for the Zoom Magnifier and as such, only the review of the
initial design was in progress.
The question regarding the method of determining T~7hether
the performance incentives are met was discussed. One incen-
tive in particular, the resolution of the magnifier, may
easily vary with observer.
It was suggested, therefore, that draw un
a set of tests to determine performance incentives. This set
of tests would serve as a first draft from which a final
of tests would be agreed upon at a meeting of
