SUBJECT : The .Mad.ified_ Photomicrograpphic Enlarger and The
Coherent Light Enlarger
25X1A
1. One modified Photomicrographic Enlarger was
available for our inspec on. n general, the unit was well constructed
and is a definite improvement on the prototype previously demonstrated
at NPIC. The working top, or stage, has been coated with white porcelain.
This coating has dual advantages in that it prevents scratching of the
film and acts as a reflecting surface against which the film can be
viewed prior to orienting it under the projection head.
2. An exposure meter has been incorporated into the equipment
by means of a beam splitter inserted in the optical path. The light
intensity scale graduations, on the model demonstrated, were not pro-
perly calibrated for the material we were using; however, a calibration
adjustment screw is provided. The meter reading permits the first
exposure setting to be correct or very nearly so the first time an exposure
is made.
3. The electrical circuit used to expose the film failed to func-
tion during the initial demonstration. The trouble was quickly traced
to a faulty crimp connector. These connectors will be reinforced with
solder on the three units being delivered to NPIC. 25X1A
4. A lengthy discussion was held with concerning coherent
light. Our primary interest was in the problems that had been uncovered
during the development of their laser powered coherent light enlarger
and upon their specific solutions to these problems. This information
was needed as background data to be utilized in formulating a decision
as to whether to continue, redirect or terminate PAR's 216 and 217 under
