This additional effort consists of the following tasks: I. (a) It was felt that in order to arrive at a firm price for Phase II, the breadboard effort had to be expanded over and above that originally anticipated by breadboarding a film drive system, both to prove out the feasibility of the Velocity Control and to check electrical and resultant mechanical positioning accuracy. This included the ability of the drive system to move without noggin> and, also, rapid and precise stopping. (b) it soon became apparent that one of our greatest problems would be to select and remove without scratching or damage an indi- vidual chip from the chip cassette, especially with a possible range in thickness of .003 to .0l2. The only satisfactory way to accomplish and guarantee the above was by breadboarding and resultant testing. The same applies to positioning the chip accurately on the platen mechanism. (c) Finally, as initial design considerations were being formulated, it soon became evident that to move a chip through each of several individual stages, both within the time interval required, and Declass Review by NIMA/DOD Approved For Release 2001/03/06 : CIA-RDP78BO4747A000400040010-3 STAT'Oo iWed For Release2001/03/06 : CIA-RDP78B04747,A000400040010-3 19 November 1964 the resultant high velocities, as well as the positioning accuracy (i.e., holding the chip in precise registration as it was transferred through the liquid gate and maintained at a definite pressure at the image plane )y this breadboarding effort also had to be expanded. The security requirement of this contract in terms of personal clearance restricted our efforts during July, August, and September. The lack of cleared personnel limited our efficiency, The clearance of all necessary personnel was accomplished by October 1964, and therefore security clearance is no longer a limiting factor. 111. Although small compared to the above efforts, other work was accomplished in conmpliaiice with your request in the following areas Parity Film Investigations ?ite-up on Tape Input (d) Positional Accuracy Investigations (e) Additional Data Recording ) Clarifications on ASA Standard Code Accordingly, and in consideration of the above, it is respect- fully requested that the subject contract be amended to authorize a Phase I completion date of 31 January 1965, with a corresponding change in funds of: STATOTHR STATOTHR Transmitted herewith for your assistance in the evaluation of this request are three (3) copies of a Cost Breakdown, which presents (a) Actual Costs as of 31 October 1964; (b) Estimate to Complete (from 1 November 1964 to 31 January 1965).; and (c) Totals, We trust that this request is complete for your evaluation and will receive your favorable consideration.
