Interferometer Test and Retrofit Program
405AM and 405B - Chip Comparator
In accordance with the visit to our facility by Messrs.
the following decisions were made concerning the
stability problem with the interferometerson subject equipment.
1) has completed its engineering evalu-
ation of necessary changes to the interferometersto increase
their stability. is presently in process of
modifying and testing five (5) production units to determine
acceptance on a production basis.
2) Modifications of the 405B equipment at your facility
will not be accomplished until the below described test pro-
gram is completed.
3) The 405AM, presently in our facility will be used
as a "test bed" to verify that the interferometer changes ful-
fill your requirements.
4) will remove two (2) interferometers
(one already in our plant) from a 405B in your facility, mod-
ify same, and install on the 405AM "test bed". It is expected
that this effort will be completed on the 405AM by 2 December
1966.
5) After initial checkout, 0 will be notified
that the test program is underway on the 405AM for a possible
visit to observe testing activities.

6) The test program is expected to last approximately
one month, therefore, shortly after 1 January 1967,
will inform that program is complete and that activ-
ities should be immediately initiated to modify all 405B's.
The above dates are given as our best estimate to com-
plete the phases described. It is quite possible that there
may be delays in procurement of necessary parts, installation
and/or testing phases. I will do all in its
power to adhere to this schedule.

At this time, it is not felt necessary to obtain con-
tractual coverage for the above activities. 25X1A
is making the assumption that this activity is part of the
405B program and that the 405AM is only used as a "test bed"
to verify the interferometer changes. When we have completed
our test program and verified the changes, contractual coverage
will be necessary to modify the 405AM and to retrofit the
interferometers to the new configurations. Budget figures
for modifications on the 405AM are Exact 25X1A
figures will be provided as soon as possible after 2 December.
The remaining 405B equipments at your facility will be
left in their present condition until the test program is
completed. Upon final decision, the retrofits will take a 3
to 4 month period to remove the interferometers, make the
necessary changes, re-install, and retest, indicating avail-
ability of the 405B's as April - May 1967, unless a concurrent
program is decided upon.
