DECLASS REVIEW by NIMA/DOD
November 16, 1.959
In compliance with the requirements of Schedule A, Article 2, Item 5,
STATINTL Contract No. we herewith submit Monthly Progress Report
No. 9. This report covers the period from 9 October 1959 to 9 November
1959 on the design and fabrication of three (3) Nadir Determining Devices.
A current progress chaxt is attached (Enclosure 1). All subassemblies,
with the exception of the servo drives for the measuring engine, are
complete. However, due to slippage in delivery of a few of the outside
manufactured parts, these subassemblies were completed behind schedule.
In last month's progress report these delays were mentioned, and their
possible adverse effect on the delivery of the first unit was predicted.
At this time the delay can be more precisely forecast to about three
weeks. The first unit will therefore be delivered December 18, 1959.
Assembly of the first unit will be completed by November 30. The adjusted
delivery date is set to provide for at least 18 days for check out and
qualification test. Detailed information concerning this delay in sched-
uled shipping date and requirements for additional funds will be made the
subject of separate correspondence.
The status of the final assembly is as follows: The Nadir cabinet has
been received and the following subassemblies have been mounted: measur-
ing engine (not including servo drive), film stage, film stage light source,
mirrors, line regulator, power supplies, blowers, and part of the electronic
components. Overall schematics and wire diagrams are completed and wiring
of the cabinet has begun. Power supplies and film stage control have been
checked to meet electrical specifications.
The electrical controls and interlocks of the Nadir have been designed to
provide a maximum of fail-safe operation. In case of component failure,
provisions are made for immediate alarm and for isolation and identifica-
tion of the fault.

During the next reporting period, the remaining subassemblies will be
mounted in the cabinet. Electrical controls will be mounted on the
control console and the cabinet will be completed. Checkout of the
total Nadir system will commence.
