PROGRESS OF WORK The investigation of methods and capabilities was continued to the point where we feel capable of suggesting hardware which will be feasible, useful, and represent the capabilities of the state-of-the-art. The limitations imposed by lens size and available illumination were thoroughly investigated. The possibilities of light-pipe techniques, electrolumnescent matrices, semiconductor matrices and incandescent lamp sources were investigated. The light-pipe technique looks promising and is being investigated further. The electroluminescent and semiconductor sources have capabilities that are orders of magnitude below the needs of practical hardware. Incandescent sources, in the form of matrices of small lamps, are impractical because of the large quantities of heat emitted. A visit was made to the Naval Reconnaissance and Technical Support Center in Washington, D. C., to examine and discuss the F. 1. and enhancement devices there. 2. PROBLEM AREAS ENCOUNTERED Nothing additional. fa PROJECTED WORK FOR THE NEXT PERIOD A visit to Shaw Air Force Base is planned to view P. 1. ities.
