PROJECT APPROVAL REQUEST
I. Identification
NPIC proposes to add two additional tasks to an existing
25X1
contract The project constitutes a 25X1
change in scope and is to be funded from th llotted 2 5X1
to Category VI, Experimental Modifications to Existing Equipment
in the Class 700 Detail Sheet of the Financial Plan for 1965.
The internal designation of the project is "Design of a Focus
Mechanism for the Chip Comparator".
II. Background
The Plans and Development Staff NPIC, under Contract
]had designed and built L~f 25X1
a prototype Chip Comparator. This instrument, delivered and
installed in July 1964, has far exceeded the design goal of a 25X1
two micron measuring capability. One-quarter micron repeata-
bility, although not yet proven, is felt to be attainable by
the Photo Interpreter with limited training and practice. As
a, result three more instruments are under contract with a fourth
on requisition.
The Comparator,, as designed and builti
did not include the stereo viewing optical system. is portion

was contracted and was to include a 25X1
focus mechanism and support assembly as a. part of the optical
head assembly. Subsequently, it was determined that the focus 25X1
mechanism could not be satisfactorily designed into the optical
head and was deleted from the ffort. 25X1

This additional impending contractual action has been co-
ordinated with OL/PD It is scheduled for
presentation to the 'IDC on 25 November 4. The contractor is
willing to accept the audited figure No further co-
ordination of this project is deemed appropriate.
