TWO items under development for us, at least that I am monitor of. Both
of these contracts are classified SECRET.
The first is the development of a spatial filtering Image Enhancement Viewer.
For a complete run-down on the status of this, see my Trip Report to Chief,
Technical Flans and Development Staff, covering a trip to Boston on 13 July
1961.
The second item is a contract for the development of a design study covering

ITEK SPATIAL FILTERING CONTRACT
STATOTHR
Conversations with 'ndicate as follows:
a. The present funding provides for theoretical, followed by actual,
investigations into the use of sloped occluding filters instead of sharp
cut of filters in the spatial filtering mechanism. Upon completion of the
investigation phase, the contract calls for modification (if warranted) to
include the gradual, or sloped, occluding filters and recommendations for
any further continuation of the work as may be warranted.
b. The theoretical investigations -five notebooks full.- are complete
and strongly indicate the soundness of the sloped filter concept.
c. Experimental results, using the first such filters, indicate a
demonstrable success in practice. Two negatives, attached hereto, show
the before and after results obtained throw the spatial filtering device
using the first sloped filter. Despite the lack of sophistication in the
filter system, there is an apparent gain in edges and object separation.
