`"` Rease,QP00/08/31: CIA 7 d0003QU0 0006-6 brA AD HOC COMMITTEE MEETING 12 December 1967 Purpose of Committee: to take a good hard look at evaluations that are now going on in.CR-l, and look into CR-2, 3, and 4 to see if we can provide the best usability. CR-1; trying to determine the capability of the system as a system. No filter change data available yet; did exercise the through-exposure; has capability of four slits; did exercise the filter change device. CR?-l; tape recorder installed; there seems to be a demand to have a tape recorder installed throughout; tape-recorder has proved .most useful for our diagnostic; cut down on manhours. Maximum difference is plus or minus two milliseconds from cursory analysis. Putting an SF05 and 09 in CR-2; the 09 will be used on engineering; SF05 is similar to a W67. There will be a good evaluation from the SF05 and 09. CR-4 will have a different combination as far as film is concerned. 25X1A CR-1 - We have a contract with M~oing systems analysis and capability analysis; is heading the operation. 25X1A First performance report in January; CR-1 - the changes that occurred because of the W21 and 23-A were very slight; differences are extremely small (tonal range). Question: As far as the CORONA system goes, we have a fairly Approved For Release 2000/08/31 : CIA-RDP78 b' 0300050006'-6 i B f Lit fie: Approved f Release,,00/08/31 : CIA-RDjaP78804767A00030 50006-6 SUBJECT: Ad Hoc Committee Meeting, 12 December 1967 complicated filter trade-off problem. Don't you feel we should have gone from 21 to 12?? I now believe that it would be best cutting down the slit. This was tried before. It was agreed that 21 to 23A were pretty smart to use. Optical system does tend to slide off; I don't think much is to be served by going back the other way. How did you come to this conclusion? I tend to believe that because of the nature of the system, the slit width at this point in time in the CR system is more important than in the J-1 because of uncompensated motion. The lens problem is not as severe as we thought back previously. We should think of the spectrosensitivity region. The difference in atmospheric radiance that you could see, you probably couldn't detect the change. This lens has grown quite a bit. Such an evaluation is within the context of this group.' Is it hard to enlist NPIC, PI type support? Get 10 best PI's rather than 100 to get a good analysis; hand pick the PI's. Major problem of shipping material, people, and data around; seems there are different ways we could operate. Looked at 136 different scans and 60% of the time could predict luminance vs solar elevation, angles, etc; altitude does change a lot. CR-2 has 3rd, 4th, and 5th test on it. Purpose of 3 is-to see if we can get bi-color images. SF05 - green filter; square shape; lens is not designed for that filter. Block test shows no difference. W/21 - controlled test 140 and shows 129 L/mm W/SFO5 - 114-126 1101 - rectified and ortho-printed. We are making bi-color shots from these. 25X1A Preliminary ideas are being forwarded. 25X1A CR-2 - polarizing filter; one combination works very well in tests. If you look right into the sun with the camera, some of the information disappears; will be able to look at different tones. CR-2 S0230 - objective is to compare 230 with 3404 in an operational mission. Filter to be used not decided on yet. CR-4 - two different types of filters and two different types of film. 25X1A The intelligence value of color films is inversely commensurate with scale of photography. Will get much poorer at smaller scale; has scale been simulated? 25X1A Has been discussed only. 25X1A Has some at lower altitudes if you want. Night photography - S0340 film will be used; 400.feet Get results on what information has come out of two cameras already used. 25X1A 25X1A Getting the problems down. If we 'run these tests could we get some evaluations on what these have proven on a more timely basis? That should be one product of the meetings of this Committee if the finding is significant. There are distinction between system analysis program tests that are being run. I 25X1A Solution - preferably,. get ON's up at Would like to see it kept at Westover for the analysis. Suppose it is taken to Westover; Westover has adequate facilities for that type of experiment; we do need to get NPIC PI's involved. Is it more desirable to have the PI's going to Westover, or get involved down here taking a couple of weeks? If TERRO interferes, we will cancel it. Does anyone use it? Never heard of it.' Do you use it Don? i Rely on TERRO for density readings. ON's at Westover would deprive PI's of the ON. Would it not be a case of general exploitation off the product they usually use? Generally it is; however, density cuts, etc. are often required from ON. 5 Approved For Release 2000/08/31: CIA-RDP71p7M,40050006-6 e
