Measurement Improvement of
As ._s been discussed vc-~ on e'?: crai occasions, the measurem.c it
accuracy of ~lachine could ee ~nrovcc: through additional efforts, Inc
t~;o u m achcs~described below eac =avc th~__r individual advantages. In the
he -'first approach, it is an ii mediate fix but does -not have a long
..nta;,~. The second approach (cam adjusted) has a long term advantage
urt:.~r measurement improvement and/or calibration can be r::ade quickly
-tioa of machine usage, wear, and basic aging of machine parts.
A- p. 1 - Shimming
Si..ce the principal cause of erro: in the measuring capabilities of
[::I;ach_:a is due to slight distortion in the ways, refinement i.n the 25X1
-ac.".fire geomeery can be accomplished. The basic method of refin=e n-_- :-s to
measure the slight distortion and shim the ways sufficient to bring "c.__s
64sto_-Zion to a minimum. This is a time consuming and temporary approach
s' _ - fie ar.:i use will cause further istortions and require further shimming.
c further disadvantage in tl at _t will require the machine to be dol....
_riod of at least two weeks and probably four weeks for each correcrt.a
en each Y axis. With respect to the X a-,is; the down time is greater
_ ~or of two.
Co. analysis sheets applicable to the estimated time to accomplish
eci ax-_s sh-- ..ing are attached. We have estimated some four weeks of effort.
11 a.. our as are accomplished at the same time, the calendar time would
not _ddit-_'ve; some overlapping effort could be achieved, thereby reducing
the ..1 ti.a to approximately four months for all four axes.

Apnro.ach 2 - Cam Adjustment
Because of the detailed ef:orc an--' extensive down time required to
cc:. ash the shimming operation, anos::ar -)roach was taken to negate the
and accomplish the program with down time and with major long
re.r efect. This . approach is to desi; :. a c--.-,,. which is attached to the basic
_l::a and carriage in such a way th -.- as a _` unction of distance moved the
__ter calibrated to the basic c.r ors - thc machine. A drawing of the
,_:ation of the cam device is attached, As shown in the figure, a fixed
_tac: to the carriage drives a pivotally mounted cam that, in turn,
a ro'-.cably mounted encoder, The c--:n function would include the
compos:ce error of ways and screw for the axis it serves. The uniq,.:
- -.: _ c of t~.; s method allows change and reduction of error in a controller
:atho:;t disturbing optics or other mechanisms of system. Cams and
wil" be accessible for modification or servicing.
It should be pointed out that the cost analysis sheet attached fo::
a ::oac:_ is for all four axes and is basad on using a straight cam to
rev a str. -ht line approximation of the. errors and adjust accorcangly.

_oa sirs` we understand that if fc_ can be brought to

: cams _::d associated hardware would amount to two to three wc:ks.
1 contract time would be two to three months to prepare the hardware
II obtain to purchase items, and perform the installation.
It firm opinion t:-.- a greater degree of measurement

The quotation submitted her,%.:_th is valid for sixty days from the

cost incurred during any monthly period, The contract is based on a
