Approved For Reoe 2004/07/29: CIA-RDP78BO477OA90 00130003-8 SECRET Monthly Report PAR 238 29 Oct 65 SUBJECT- Equipment Installation TASK/PROBLEM fat. i.1 it yo Install and check. out the following equipment at the customer's a,. Roller Transport Processor (12-Inch) b. Roller Transport Processor (24-Inch) DISCUSSION 2, Both the 12-Inch and 24-Inch Processors have been installed and are operable, 3, Leaks in stainless steel threaded pipe joints, reported during the checkout periods on each of the mach.i.nes, have been repaired. Leaks of this nature are typical of stainless steel threaded fittings, 4, Eight carbon steel cap screws in the heads of each of eight heat exchangers were replaced by the contractor's engineer, The use of stainless cap screws in applications similar to that cited above is a deviation from standard trade practice and also a deviation from normal manufacturing pro- cedure by the contractor, 5. The contractor's supplier, when questioned with regard to the use of stainless steel. bolts in this application, indicated that there was probably no reason to believe that galling of the bolts would be a problem, but that the use of stainless steel bolts for this application was most unusual Declass Review by NGA. GROUP 1 EXCLUDED FROM AUTOMATIC DOWNGRADNG SECRET AND DECLASSIFICATION Approved For Release 2004/07/29 : CIA-RDP78BO477OA000800130003-8 Approved For Reoe 2004/07/29: CIA-RDP78BO477OA00 00130003-8 SECRET PAR 238 29 Oct 65 6. Four body bolts, lock washers, and nuts were replaced in each of eighteen transfer valves by the contractor's engineer. The use of stainless steel for this application is normal manufacturing procedure in the con- tractor's facility and the valves were specified and ordered with 303 stain- less steel bolts, lock washers and nuts., A check with the supplier indicated that this again is a deviation from standard trade practice and that for this reason the valves were inadvertently incorrectly shipped. Because the bolts are flash plated with chromium or nickel, they appear very similar to stain- less steel and for that reason were not detected by visual inspection during manufacture of the equipment. 7. All gaskets in the bleach recirculating system were replaced with gaskets made from Teflon sheet? The dichromate bleach used in the reversal. process is a unique chemical. No previous experience with the effect of this chemical. on mechanical equipment was available. It has been learned from this application that standard gasket material normally supplied with stainless pumps, heat exchangers and filter bodies is not compatible with dichromate bleach. The Teflon gaskets used for replacement should be watched to determine their compatibility with dichromate bleach, 8. Hose clamps used on the processors are "all stainless" clamps, They are standard in the industry and. are the best available for this particular service, However, evidence of rust is not uncommon with stainless clamps and is usually caused by deposits of dust and dirt which contain iron particles. Any replacement would be with clamps of material now used. 9. Arrangements have been made with the contractor's vendor to return all. metering valves for credit and to replace them with valves in which the threads in the valve bonnet are protected from the solution. These are more expensive valves and an extra charge will be made. These will be replaced as required, 11. Pin holes in the emulsion have been noted on films processed on the RT 12?-Inch Processor, An effort will be made to determine the source of the defect and to make the necessary corrections in the equipment or in operating procedure, The reason for these pin holes has not been determined. PLANKED ACTIVITY 12, Continue to work with customer on existing problems, 13. Submit work plan to solve problem of cut sheet feed into ferrotypes, SECRET GROUP 1 EXCLUDED FROM AUTOMATIC DOWNGRADNO AND DECLARIFICATION Approved For Release 2004/07/29 : CIA-RDP78BO477OA000800130003-8
