Change in Scope on with the
for the Aspheric Lens
Study at no additional costs.
1.
has been in effect since 0 June 1963. Its originally stated
objective was an investigation of techniques for aspherizing
optical surfaces and an *valuation of aspheric optical projection
systems. Additionally-, the general consulting services of Dr.
(at that
tum) and the contract's principal investigator, were purchased.
The original period of performance was until 30 June 1965 at a
can of appr ximatel.y II Since that time, the period of
performance has been emended to 31 March 1.967, and additional
funding of approximately has been granted. At present,
on estimated remains unused under the contract-
2. In recent weeks, I aspherics work has been
severely hindered by numerous computer problems allied with his
automatic lens design programs. His frustration has been steadily
mounting and culminated in an explanatory meeting, held in
NPIC/TDS on 6 September 1966. Those in attendance besides Dr.
I Tsro ma j or
poluxe were r out during the discussion. (a) that until
can gain access to an appropriately large and
flexible enough computer and program little further pzoductivit
under our contract is likely; and (b) that strong preliminary
indications are that aspberic elements, although of great value
in large optical systems, exhibit little promise of improving
aameet3,3. lens systems such as those involved in 1IPIC projection
applications.

3. In view of the above factors, it is: requested that:
a. Further work on the design and analysis of
aspheric optical elements be discontinued by Dr.
for the duration of this contract
b. she contract itself rein in effect through
its planned expiration date of 31 March 1967 to pro--
vide for TDS personnel general consulting
services in the field of geometrical optics;
!. be directed to submit as soon
as possible a final report on the spherics portion
of the contract, relating both its suceesses and fail-
ures and an outlook for the future value of such work
to 'IC.
