SUBJECT: Request for Information Concerning Receipt of Spooled
Film
1. The Imagery Exploitation Group requests information concerning
the possibility of receiving spooled film in 1000 foot lengths in the
future. IEG recently has requested TS8G to continue design of a 918
light table for use with film in spooled lengths no greater than 500
feet. The spool diameter of 101/2 inches for 1000 foot spools and the
weight of the film in this length would have required longer film
holding brackets and rather elaborate counterbalancing. The 75/8 inch
diameter film spools for 500 foot lengths of film have been included
in the present design specifications. This eliminated the need for costly
modification to specifications that would have resulted in a Change-in-
scope in the contract for a prototype 918 Advanced Light Table.
2. In the past, film received from the= program as
,spooled in 1000 foot lengths on 101/2 inch spools. At present, an
RF-14D camera system film take is received on 1000 foot spools. If
film spools of this diameter and weight are received after the Advanced
918 Light Tables are in use, the film cannot be examined on these tables.
The Southeast Asia Branch considers the 500 foot lengths on 75/8 inch
diameter spools better suited to their operation in that it would reduce
exploitation time. This Branch is involved in the exploitation of film
now received in 1000 foot lengths.
3. In order to solve the problem of exploitation of film expected
in 1000 foot lengths, the following is requested :
a. That all field components send film to NPIC in lengths
no greeter than 500 feet on 75/8 inch spools or,
b. That PSG respool film received in 1000 foot lengths on
3.01/2 inch diameter film spools onto spools of 500 feet length.>
(75/8 inch diameter) or smaller.

4, Ike would appreciate your response to this request in order
to determine the requirement for including a 1000 foot spool handling
capability in the design of future phottiinterpretation equipment.
