SUBJECT: Report of Trip to
25X1
1. On 4 October 1967, I made a tri to to discuss 25X1
the 15? eyepieces for the Zoom 70 with I land to discuss the problems found 25X1
in the 13X magnifiers with 0 I a so returned the fine focus microscope
mount to =and left a 13X magnifier with 1I for modification. 25X1
2. representative, and myself
inspected and discussed the 15 eyepieces for the Zoom 70. The tilted eye-
pieces have an unacceptable feature in that they rotate the images slightly
away from the operator as the inter-pupilary distance is enlarged. Ipre- 25X1
sented alternate approaches to solving this; the most realistic being t e
addition of a capability to adjust the prisms to compensate for the rotation.
I Istated, however, that to build the new eyepieces would require a new con-
ract since they feel that the present eyepieces meet the requirement of the
existing contract. The production costs of the proposed version of the eye-
pieces will be about 20% higher than the estimate given for the present 15?
eyepieces. I agreed to send a Zoom 70 which had been fitted for a wide
span rhomboid and ould t en mount the 15? eyepieces on it and send it
back for operational evaluation. The wide span rhomboid has image rotation
elements in it which will compensate for the rotation in the eyepieces. There-
fore, the eyepieces can be evaluated in this mode operationally.
3. met me at his facility and I ex-
plained to him the problems encountered in using the 13X magnifiers.
The first problem being that the sharp edges on the retie e retaining ring
cause scratches in the film. I I would polish off these
edges at no cost to the Government- e secon pro em is parall caused
h the separation between the reticle and the film.id that
would investigate several approaches to solving this pro lem and sub-
mit estimates for performing the desired work. I left a 13X magnifier kit
with and he said they would modify it to reduce or eliminate the
para x anen return it for Government approval. No cost to the Govern-
ment would be involved in modifying the magnifier I left.
