SECRET Approved For Release 2005/06/06 : CIA-RDP78B04770A002400040013-9 30 Oct 64 SUBJECT: Color Reproduction Systems Review TASK/PROBLEM 1. In view of the recent importance attached to color photography by the intelligence community, investigate and determine the most suitable means to reproduce and utilize multiple copies of color materials. Determine the most suitable reproduction system and types of equipment to be used in all phases of the reproduction cycle. Also, attempt to define how color photography can best be utilized by the photo interpreter. DISCUSSION 2. Since the last report, study has concentrated on the enlarging phases of duplication and reproduction. Earlier efforts were concentrated on con- tact printing by various techniques and on enlarging with one basic system to different magnifications. through four different systems for Color Internegative Film was employed obtaining 5X transparency enlargements and compared with 5X transparencies using Internegative Film and with a 5X direct enlargement from the original color positive to lI Special Color Duplicating Film Type SO-271 (see attached flow diagram, Figure l). 3. The best quality obtained was the direct 5X positive enlargement from the original. The poorest system was the enlargement made from the second generation SO-121 copy through the internegative system. This degradation is caused by using a high contrast material in duplicating to obtain color separation and sharpness. The low contrast data reduction copy on SO-108 re- sults in an excellent enlargement through the internegative system. The SO-108 copy itself has good color rendition with low contrast. 4? Development of briefing aids continues. At the present time, five have been designed. 5. Reproduction equipment and techniques are being summarized. GROUP 1 Declass Review by NGA.
