SUBJECT: Color Reproduction Systems Review
Declass Review by NGA.
TASK/PROBLEM
1. In view of the recent importance attached to color photography by the
intelligence community, investigate and determine most suitable means to re-
produce and utilize multiple copies of color materials. Determine most suitable
reproduction system and types of'equipments to be used in all phases of the repro-
duction cycle. Also attempt to define how color photography can best be utilized
by the photo interpreter.
DISCUSSION
2. The working program plan for this effort has been finalized as outlined
below. The ground rules define the level of effort for each type of originl
film to be considered.
a. The end product shall appear to the observer as the original scene
with the observer present on the ground.
b.. The overall color system gamma or contrast of the second generation
shall not exceed 6.0.
c. Only color corrected lens willbe used in color reproduction efforts.
d. The maximum magnification will be 19X.
e. Duplication and reproduction of high-altitude scenes (above haze)
will be the final goal.
f. Scale of photography to be reproduced will range in scale from
1:20,000 to 1.250,000.
g. Demonstration material for both paper prints and transparencies
will not exceed 20 x 2I. inches.
3. The above ground rules are a means of limiting the study parameters.
There is recognized the possibility of exceptions and these will be treated as
individual cases.
14.. For each original taking material to be evaluated, the following demon-
stration material will be produced:

Color transparencies (1:1 contact print),
b.
Enlargements:
5X to 19X, both paper and transparencies.
a.
Stereo pairs:
Contact and enlargements up to 5X.
Representative scenes will be printed at three density levels plus a color ring-
a-round at each level, and the emphasis will be on the production of the highest
quality second generation materials.
PLANNED ACTIVITIES
5. Work is continuing on the study to produce demonstration materials as
noted above. First samples have already been generated. from experimental film
type 6513 and will be reported in the next period report.
