How to speed the handling of
customer's buy and sell orders.
A momentary stock market price fluctua-
tion can make the difference of hundreds
of dollars in a stocktransaction. Forthis rea-
son, speed is essential. A.C. Allyn & Co.,
Chicago, chose the Electrowriter System
for this most vital communication link.
Now, five Electrowriter Transmitters rush
buy and sell orders from the sales
offices to the trading department.
The Electrowriter installation thus
permitted A. C. Allyn & Company's trading
department to be located separately from
their sales office?orders can be trans-
mitted with telephone speed plus written
accuracy.
How to speed the cash requirements of
member banks to the Federal Reserve
One of the functions of the Federal Reserve
is to supply the immediate cash needs of a
member bank upon receipt of a written
money requisition. The reputation of a
bank depends upon its ability to meet its
financial obligations without delay. Prior
to the installation of an Electrowriter
System, a messenger was sent to the
Federal Reserve with a signed money req-
uisition. This resulted in considerable
delay. The "high fidelity" message trans-
missions of an Electrowriter system now
permit the Bank of America, San Francisco
to "flash" ready-cash requirements to the
Federal Reserve. The new system ensures
new speed, plus a permanent written
record at both the sending and receiving
stations. All transmissions bear the
authorizing signature of a bank official.
iPt_NCPORTATION
How to alert all airline departments
to last-minute air service requirements
and changing passenger load.
Expediting modern air travel depends upon
a closely scheduled time-table of arrival
and departure times, passenger check-ins
and seat reservations, and equipment
service and maintenance. In order to avoid
the overlapping of reservation allocations,
and guarantee that each individual air
service department is advised of the last
minute flight information, United Air
Lines, Chicago, links their Electrowriter
System to stations such as the Ticket
Counter and Passenger Reservations and
to air-services such as the Flight Kitchen
and Traffic Control. The Electrowriter non-
attended receiving feature frees personnej,---,
from answering the telephone and tran
scribing verbal information to written form.
R ;
How to speed vital aircraft
maintenance instructions from
Central Maintenance to maintenance
specialist stations.
The Air Defense preparedness program
depends upon the continuing maintenance
of Air Defense equipment. It is the goal
of this program to have each individual
piece of equipment ready for immediate
use at all times. An integral part of this
program is the rapid dispatch of vital infor-
mation, material, and personnel when and
where they are needed. An expanded
Electrowriter System-based upon this
program, installed at the Hamilton Air
Force Base, California speeds this vital
information and contributes materially to
maintenance-supply efficiency.
APPLiANCE MAN12:"
How to provide immediate written
message transmission from Production
Control to manufacturing area.
Modern mass production methods dictate
close supervision of product progress
through each stage of manufacture in
order to avert costly production errors and
line shut-downs. Very often a written
message is the only method certain to
convey vital production-change informa-
tion adequately without need of reverting
to an entire production stoppage. In order
to maintain a well-ordered production flow
consistent with a tradition of product
quality, Sunbeam Corporation, Chicago,
uses Electrowriter units for immediate
message transmission from production-
control to manufacturing areas.
AIRCRAFT MANUFACTURE
How to link production areas with
parts storage centers in order to
speed dispatching of critically
needed parts.
The manufacture of modern aircraft
requires the coordination of an amazing
complex of research, engineering, manu-
facturing , and parts storage centers spread
over an unusually large working area. In
order to link each of the many far-flung
production departments of the Boeing Co.,
Seattle-Renton, Wash., Communication
Systems Analyists recommended the use
of an Electrowriter direct-dialing, inter-
plant communication system. Now, merely
by dialing a number, the multi-station
Electrowriter System goes into operation
to link distribution centers, work areas,
and isolated field locations with such vital
departments as sub-assembly storage
areas, and parts and tool depots. In addi-
tion, an ultra-flexible Electrowriter/DATA
PHONE system has been installed to
provide both written and voice direct-
dialing communications over the regular
telephone system. The Electrowriter/
DATA-PHONE system also allows direct-
dialing to any telephone or any Electra-
writer/DATA-PHONE installation located
anywhere in the world!

4 e 5 ation and Operation
Your Electrowriter unit is powered by
ordinary electrical outlets. Signals are
transmitted over telephone lines wired to
units at each station. Fully transistorized
design eliminates the need for extraneous
power packs.
Anyone can operate an Electrowriter.
Writing is as easy as using a ballpoint
pen on ordinary paper. Compact design
permits desk-top operation. Transis-
torized construction permits instant
operation; eliminates lengthy warm-up.

Specially trained electronic technicians service and install every Electrowriter
System. Electrowriter service personnel are skilled specialists backed by
years of electronic training coupled with a home office service training program
continually supervised by Regional Technical Supervisors. Service offices
are located in every major city.
An Electrowriter Serviceman is just a phone call away. Maintenance service
is available during normal working hours or on a 24 hour-a-day-7-days-a-

TRANSCEIVER
Electrowriter units are analog devices capable of direct transmission of handwritten mes-
sages, sketches, or any other form of graphic data involving two coordinate positioning.
The units are self-contained and fully transistorized. They need no extraneous power sup-
ply. Three types are available. They are transmitters, receivers and transceivers. The trans-
ceiver unit both sends and receives written messages.

SWITCHING EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
Cl PUSHBUTTON SELECTOR The Cl pushbutton selector allows single or multiple station
selection. This unit provides the flexibility to transmit to groups of stations and at times to
only one station. Single station selection is obtained by depressing one button. Multiple
station selection is achieved by depressing any combination of buttons or all of them. Type
Cl is for use on customer-owned lines or leased telephone lines for write-only service. The
Type Cl selector can consist of any number of pushbuttons. Each button, when depressed,
will light to show that a station has been selected. If the station selected is busy, a "busy"
light will glow on the selector. Each button is clearly labeled for identification purposes.
One button in each row of six buttons on the selector is a "clear" button which is used to
restore any selected buttons in that row to the normal position.
The Type Cl requires pairs of wires to each receiving station from each pushbutton
level in the selector.
C2 PUSHBUTTON SELECTOR The C2 pushbutton selector allows single station selection only.
This system provides written transmission to one station at a time and is for use where
single station selection is required. The C2 selector is similar to the Cl type in characteristics
and requirements except that depression of any button restores all others to the ? normal
position. The "clear" button is depressed after transmission is completed to restore the
selected button to the normal position.
CIRCUIT SELECTORS and AUTOMATIC CONTROL UNITS.
CS1 Circuit Selector allows, by means of a simple switch, the selection of a pre-
determined group of receiving stations from a larger number of receiving stations. The unit
contains two signal lamps, used to indicate switch position and circuit availability.
CUL CU2 and CU3 are Automatic Control units which, by means of sensing net-
works, respond to transmitted signals to effect the automatic opening Or closing of circuits
in a predetermined pattern.
CSUl, CSU2 and CSU3 units combine manual control of the CS1 unit with automatic
control of the CU units to provide both manual and automatic circuit selection. Lights on
the units show switch position and circuit availability. The CSU3 unit is used where a
transmitting or transceiving station requires alternate access to a private line network and
to the telephone switched network via a data set.

SWITCHING EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTIONS
04 DIAL SELECTOR. The D4 dial selector allows written communication to or between stations by means of
dialing through a dial switchboard modified for write-only service. Flexibility and adaptability are provided
as new stations may be added to the system by simply wiring into the switchboard. Almost unlimited
selection capacity can be achieved depending upon the capacity of the switchboard. Simultaneous com-
munication paths are also possible depending upon the switchboard capacity. Type D4 is for use on customer-
owned lines or leased telephone lines for write-only service.
05 DIAL SELECTOR. The D5 dial selector is similar to the D4 dial selector in capabilities and function.
However, the D5 dial selector has the added feature of providing an assurance signal that the called
receiving station is actually connected. Upon feeding paper at the called receiving station on signal from
the transmitting station, the D5 dial tone light will glow momentarily at the transmitting station to indicate
that paper was fed at the receiving station, thereby assuring the connection.
RD1 ANSWER BACK UNIT for receive-only stations in dial selection systems of the D5 type. This unit
connects to a receiver at a receive-only station and provides the same assurance as described for the
D5 dial selector.
ELECTROWRITER PAX SWITCHBOARDS

VOICE/WRITE ATTENDED AND UNATTENDED WRITTEN SERVICE.* When Electrowriter units are used in
combination with the telephone (Bell Telephone Data-Phone 601A dataset or comparable telephone and
subset) written information can be sent over regular telephone networks at the message or monthly rate.
Either attended or unattended service can be employed at the push of a button. Electrowriter-telephone
service provides for the transmission of written orders, diagrams, requisitions, signatures and other data by
simply dialing the party you wish to write. A connection can be made regardless of whether the called
Electrowriter-telephone station is being attended or not. When Electrowriter instruments are used with the
601A dataset an EM4 control unit should be ordered for each station.
*Electrowriter instruments are accepted for use over local and long distance facil-
ities of the Bell System, General Telephone System and independent telephone
companies.
EM4 END OF MESSAGE 601A CONTROL UNIT. The End of Message control unit is used with Electrowriter
units connected to Bell Telephone 601A datasets allowing written messages to be sent or received over
regular telephone facilities. Messages may be received on an unattended or attended basis. The EM4 control
unit contains an "End of Message" button and disconnect sensing device necessary for either unattended
or attended operation. An EM4 control unit should be ordered for each Electrowriter-601A data set station.
SS60 SUBSET. The Subset 60 is for use with alternate voice/write service on privately owned dial telephone
systems. The subset insures that the line will not be disconnected when switching from the telephone to the
Electrowriter instrument and back again. When the Electrowriter instrument is used with the telephone on
other than privately owned dial facilities, the local telephone company will supply a subset.

Ki, K2 or K3 ACKNOWLEDGMENT CONSOLES AND PANELS An acknowledgment console or
panel is comprised of a number of lights on a console unit or panel and is used with a sepa-
rate pushbutton selector. The panel type (K2 or K3) either desk or wall mounted, is situated
near the transmitter, and indicates with its display lights that a written message has been
received at the receiver station (s). The console type functions the same as the panels but has
smaller acknowledgment lights and therefore is of overall smaller size. The lights in an
acknowledgment console or panel remain on until turned off by a signal from the receiving
station which, depending on the type of alerting device used at the receiving station, may be
manually given or it may be automatic. Acknowledgment signals are transmitted over the
regular Electrowriter signal lines. No additional lines are needed.
KB/C1 ACKNOWLEDGMENT CONSOLE WITH PUSHBUTTON SELECTOR. A KB/C1 acknowledg-
ment console is a single unit combination Of an acknowledgment console (K1) and a Cl
pushbutton selector. The KB/C1 acknowledgment console contains acknowledgment lights
and pushbuttons for selection in sending to remote receiving stations. The function and
operation is similar to Ki, K2 or K3 acknowledgment units with separate pushbutton
selectors.
The KB/C1 console may be used as an automatic busy line indicator instead of an acknowl-
edgment console. When wired to indicate busy line conditions, the light associated with a
remote station will glow when the remote station is busy receiving from another transmitting
station. Each circuit busy light (acknowledgment light) will glow to indicate a busy condi-
tion when its particular circuit is busy without first depressing the associated pushbutton.
Busy line conditions may be observed by simply glancing at the console.
A/C1 CIRCUIT ASSURANCE CONSOLE WITH PUSHBUTTON SELECTOR. A circuit assurance con-
sole warns against broken signal line conditions. A circuit assurance console contains push-
buttons and circuit lights representing all remote receiving stations and a maintenance light
and buzzer. The pushbuttons provide selection in sending to the remote receiving locations.
The circuit lights guard against broken circuit conditions. Each circuit light is assigned to
monitor one circuit. All circuit lights remain on unless a circuit is broken or a receiver turned
off. If this happens, then the particular circuit light involved will turn off and the buzzer will
sound alerting personnel of the broken circuit conditions. The buzzer can be shut off which
lights the maintenance light as a reminder of the circuit problem. When the circuit is re-
stored to normal, the maintenance light will turn off and the circuit light will turn on.
Circuit assurance consoles operate over regular Electrowriter signal lines. No additional
lines are needed.
