1. The 544th ARTW Research Division has experienced
considerable difficulty in the past few months in focus-
ing the Zoom 240 Stereoscope. The Rhomboid arms
on this scope can e equipped with either a 1X stereo
lens providing a 30X magnification or a 2X lens provid-
ing 60X magnification. Both lenses are supplied with
the Stereoscope. The distance the 1X lens can travel
and remain in focus is approximately ?.0075 inch, but
this distance is reduced to approximately ?.002 inch
for the 2X lens. A recent conversation with
from has possibly identified the cause o our ocus-
ing i. -ficulties.

ing in the .0')2 inch range.
.3. The 544th ARTW Research Division is in the process of
replacing all 2X rhomboid lenses with the 1X lens. The
subsequent reduction of magnification power by a factor
of 2 may well have a detrimental effect on the quality of
interpretation and on the reports generated from this re-
quired change.
..4. While company representatives are aware of this problem,
as well as users at the DoD level, recommend 00AMA be advised
and corrective action be taken to encompass the specifications
of the 2X rhomboid lens into the specifications of the
?1540 table.
