SUBJECT: Dry S.lver Enlarger/Reader/Printer
1. In keeping with NPIC policy of project coordLnation within the
intelligence community, a Dry Silver briefing waas presented in 1967 by
the facilities to a selected group of repre-
seentatives from the community. As a result of this presentation the
Nave. Air Systems Command went into contract with the in
1968 for the development of an enlarger/reader/printer designed for
shipboard use ; I.e., vibration isolation, modular construction to allow
passage through shipboard water tight hatches, etc. This project was
monitored by the Navy Photographic Center as well as Naval Reconnaissance
and Technical Support Center and was a "duel" project. Additionally,
the undersigned kept in touch with the project as it progressed until
the final delivery to the U.B. Navy. At this time, a group of interested
NPIC personnel, mainly from IM :end PSG, was assembled and visited the
NPC T8E facility for a demonstration and briefing on this equipment.
(Note...-The LAS representative was preempted by a higher priority briefing.)
The comments of the attending personnel with reference to the performance
of the equipment were generally very favorable.
2. It was apparent in the early stages of this development that
project was going to be quite successful and that NPIC has require-
that this equipment could fulfill. Therefore, an NPIC developed
ger/Reeder/Printer was programmed into the FY-170 Development
Budget. It is expected that proposals for the development of this item
will be received within the next few weeks, Proposals for both a "Chinese
Copy" and a modified version to accept inch wide roll film are expected.
The actual development route will be selected by NPIC personnel, after
reviewing the Center requirements and the cost differences.
