Services & Support Group is of the Probability of Retainin the Hi h g g eclsion Stereo Comparator at F ___j Per your request the Development & ib i fe as t,y of leaving the Comparator at for operation and utilization. Initial investigation would indicate--that this would not be a feasible approach because of the prohibitive costs and complications involved, 2A These costs and complications lay in the following areas: full-time security personnel assigned. e whole comparator area would have to be made a with b? Due to the specialized nature of the computer programs involved, the instrument has to operate on-line to NPIC's UNIVAC 4914 computers. We would have the continuing expense of the data liar, and because of the nature of the information it would have to be incoded and decoded at both ends. for emergencies. we--u- aria a oacx-up ,.. Original Negftive - The comparator was designed to use the negative where the sophistication of the measurement require- ment makes it necessary. The Original negative is needed full time at NPIC for reproduction purposes and there is a distinct risk in transporting the unique copy back and forth across the country. 3. There are some advantages to the proposal in that the comparator VOU3d be maintained in an area in close proximity to competent maintenance nel. However, maintenance cost would not be significantly reduced except for savings in transportation and per diem. As a consequence, it might be more feasible to maintain an representative in Washington 25X1 rather than a NPIC representative in San Francisco. The risks of shipping the comparator from the West Coast to the Nast Coast have been somewhat exaggerated; since, precise laboratory equipment, of equal degree of cclexity, is often shipped throughout the country by Air Van. The crucial portion of the comparator is the Optical Bridge and this has to be shipped . to fan Francisco and there would be no more risk in shipping it from 15an ancisco to Washington than there is inherent in thel trip. 25X1 0 ing a wreck or a crash, the possibility of significant damage during, 4. It is recommended that the comparator be installed in as originally anticipated and, if maintenance becomes a problem, a provide a full time maintenance man at NPIC whether he be= or 25X1 25X1 25X1 ency. This should prove significantly less expAnsive in the long run. e , eveopmen. Engineering ? ivision Distribution: -Original - Addressee 2 ?
