SUBJECT : The Regional Semi-annual Meeting of the Society of
Photogramme try
1. This meeting which took place in New York City was extremely
well attended for a semi-annual regional meeting. There were 21 exhi-
bitors and attendants of about 300 meMbers, many of whom were scouts
for industrial improvenents. I noticed a definite change in the tenor
of this meeting over others which our representatives have attended
in the past. There seemed to be a great deal of prospecting going on
in terms of ideas, equipment, people, new technological advances, etc.
%tile the people from Autometrics had considerable to do with the
agenda, they did not exhibit. The Boston firms such as Itek were not
even represented. However, most of New York state was well represented
and members or IBM, General Electric, Bausch and tonb and all of the
Long Island and New York metropolitan complex were amply represented.
There was one night session in which a group of technical specialists
in computers net and decided to suggest to the American Society of
Photogranmetry that a committee be formed to represent the Society in
screening papers for technical content and in answering qaestions of a
technical nature which the Society receives. This is essentially a new
effort. There were several Panel's which were definitely state-of..the-
art photography in addition to those graphic, topographic, engineering
and civil contributions which have been rehashed for the last twenty
years.
2. In summary, I believe it was a profitable experience and that
slowly there is a diffusion of the advance in technology through societies
such as this one which is invigorating and stimulating to industry and
to photogrammetry as a whole. This diffusion is not fast, probably
because of security. It must be noted that a paper which was to be pre-
sented on the afternoon of October 4 was cancelled with no warning. This
was to be presented by Mr. Leonard S* Sherry of Fairchild on the "Use
of Panoramic Cameras in Mapping and Cartography".

3. EXamples of some of the new concepts which were presented
at this meeting are: ,Jack Friedman of OMI presented the New Thinking
Surrounding the Helaya Plotter and its Impact on Photogrammetry, the
Space Environments Laboratory, which has been recently created at
Fairchild presented by Mts. Norton, and "The Optimization of Photographic
Systems" by Charles E. Campbell of Cornell Aeronautical Laboratories,
Inc. were exceptional when contrasted to the normal papers presented
at this meeting. The field trip to Fairchild was especially illuminating
especially to those who had little feelings for Space Environments. A
visit to Lockwood Kessler and Bartlett, Inc. was a demonstration of ,
civil aspects of photogrammet to.ay
