The work which we have done on Kunming Military Installations is not in the detail required for OSR. We have supplied the information we have to IAS and have arranged X1 for the IEG analysts on this area, to meet regularly with the IAS counterparts. IAS will complete all the work-on L/'? Kunming Military Region unilaterally. 2. We estimate that ewe can do the Lanchou Military Region in 12 to 15 months if we can augment the four PIs currently assigned tothis region with an "other four. The additional four PIs will work full time on the military installations studies under the guidance of the PIs assigned to each providence. The latter PIs, however, will have to spend much of their time on first- and second-phase reporting and in developing overall familiarity with their real estate. We doubt that they will be able to spend more than 1/3 of their time to the military installation reporting. 3. Following completion of Lanchou we could undertake the Wuhan MR. However, in discussions with L he rA~~ a +h h- th r v agency might underta e this area. 1!. Regarding Tibet and Sinkiang, the analysis and reporting which we have done to date does not contain the chronology and mensuration necessary to meet OSR's needs. It could serve, however, to identify facilities and their current status. X1 5. Ray has talked with I and several others in DIAAP-9. A copy of his MR is attached. DIAAP-9 appears willing and eager to undertake some of these studies if they can be properly tasked. 25 ~xc!aci sir zaicriati ~fnrngred;,g ad 11 Approved For Release 2004/03/26 Cecla;aificaiit;, ClER 78B05703A0001000 EFE Appro ied Fo*lease 20SI, iQ3; FIA-RDP78B057)00100030024-6 25 6. If you concur with my proposal to take on the Lanchou Military Region, I will need to reassign four PI positions; two each from SD and MSD to the f'!Yiina Branch, EGD. I believe we could be starte on is project by the 15th of July. 25 Chief, Imagery Exploitation Group NPIC Distribution: 1 - O/DIR 2 - NPIC/IEG 3 - NPIC/IEG 4 - NPIC/IEG/EGD 5-IAS 25 Approved For Release 200 /Q,3/26 : CIA-RDP78B05703A00
