Attached info per your
request re local academic
training:
Of the total 77 students,
37 have BA/BS, an additional
3 have MA, 15 in clerical
positions, 17 are blacks.
Some knowledge of ac-
counting is standard for
many computer professionals
and is a requisite in many
ADP training programs, par-
ticularly those related to
management information
systems. The Chief, AID
had similar training and
feels it is of definite
value.

AIIE SUBJ: College-Level Course in Accounti
g
Roger:
You had asked for some additional words on our rationale for sending people to a
college-level course in accounting. Some knowledge of accounting is a stock in trade
for many computer professionals, not only for business applications, but also for infor-
mation handling applications. Consequently, it is a requisite in many ADP academic
programs. For example, the CEIR course in Systems Design which I took some years ago
had the following course blocks: Math Refresher (no credit); Hardware (3 credits);
Software (3 credits); Modern Math (3 credits); Statistics (3 credits); Accounting (2
credits); Human Factors (2 credits); Management (2 credits); Operations Research (3
credits); and, Systems Design Workshop (5 credits).
We have encouraged our professional and technical personnel to seek self-improve-
ment, and have offered to assist them through tuition payments for job-related courses.
We have made it clear, particularly to our non-college grads, that their off-duty en-
deavors at self-improvement are a consideration in future advancement. As I recall,
four of the five who are taking accounting this fall are non-college grads working on
Data Processing Systems Certificates. Two semesters (six credit hours) of Accounting
are required for this certificate.
